Help! my back packs died
« on: June 25, 2008, 10:25:13 pm »
It started fine when I switched it on this morning, then just stopped. I checked out all the usual probs, but had no luck.
The problem is with the pump, I already checked out the PCB.
I wired the pump up direct, bypassing the PCB and it wouldn't start, checked it out with the meter and the pump was getting 13.7 volts. I then removed the black plastic cover that fits over the soldered pump connections, there are slots that enable you to turn the pump a little with a small screwdriver, as soon as I moved it the pump started up again, it will continue running until I stop it, but it won't start up again unless I turn it again with a screwdriver.
Is there any way I can dismantle the pump to check for an obstruction? I tried forcing water into the outlet but that won't work either, there must be a one way valve.
Has anyone changed the pump on the backpack? How did you remove those clips off the hoses?and did you use jubilee clips as replacements?
Where can I get a new pump?

Sorry for all the questions guys. I really don't think that the backpack is up for the job, I already changed one PCB and I only use the thing on about 7 days out of a month.
Any suggestions appreciated. Dai

That sounds like a problem with the brushes in the motor dai, if you can get the pump out and strip the end off, there should be 2 brushes, clean them with a bit of emery paper and retry.

Your BP fairly new isn't it?

Are the WCW backpack pcb's covered in a resin compound?? If they are then leaving them in damp areas shouldn't cause a problem as the resin is waterproof, they have to be incase anything is spilled during a refill.

When my surflo was new I had this stop starting problem and I still get it sometimes now, turns out to be the battery plugs are a little temperamental, disconnect and reconnect with a twist and it goes again.

This isn't dia's problem as he has voltage at the pump, but something for new comers to the BP to be aware of.

My Surflow is about 18 months old now. I did fill it this morning before putting the battery back in.
I think that the filling is the devil where backpacks are concerned.
Jeff, Are the brushes on the left hand side, behind those 3 long screws?

The brushes are inside the pump, there the things that the 2 cables are connected to inside the pump itself, I've not had mine apart but will check it out tomorrow for you dai

I removed the motor, it is not a serviceable unit, you can't get at the brushes.
I have been on to Williams pumps Tel 08452263638 [so very helpful as always] They have a replacement motor and pump for the backpack, this replacement is a better quality pump, with ball bearings instead of the sleeve type fitted by Shurflo, it's also about £10 cheaper.
About £50, that's a lot cheaper than a new backpack. Ordered another Varistream too.
I always seem to spend a hell of a lot of money when I am rained, off and not earning any.
