in your experience whats best to do?

i have a couple of guys who work with me, have a couple of time gone out on their own and i split the money with them and a little bit for me.

when they work with me i pay £6.50 a hour...how tight am i lol

im just wondering what you find works best, i said in another post im picking up work like no mans buisness at least 3 a day and i keep saying yes, im getting later and later with my existiing customers which i know is bad but i just dont wanna say no

i dont think a hourly rate would work when theyre on their own, cause they could do nothing (i doubt they would but no reason why they couldnt) and thought that a split between us all will make them work for it.

i can only work 4 days a week as i have the kids fri - sunday. so im planning on sending one guy out at the mo on fridays, and splitting money with him. i was talkin to a ice cream man the other day and he sends someone out in his trailer and he splits the money 50/50, and said look 50% of the something is better than 50% of nowt, which really made me think. so i could send my one lad out on a friday and he could just plod along and earn as much as he wants.

i really want to get 2 guys out there all the time doing the rounds with maybe a 35/35 split for them and 30 for me.

if i look at it in one way, ok im only gettin 30%...but its 30% of something and not 30% of  nothing with me not geting round the work or customers possibly dropping cause i get later and later each month...anyone help me out

i think the 35/35 split is pretty reasonable but if i was sending someone out alone i would split it more 60% them 40% me but expect them to get around a certain amount of work so the 40% would cover all expenses and leave some profit.

Have been thinking about this myself recently. I understand where you are coming from with a % split but you are the employer, you are the guy getting the business, supplying the van, paying sick/holiday leave, NI, will pay their holidays and so on so why base it on a split. I was looking at something like aiming for about £8.50 per hour made up of the following -

Minimum wage as the base earnings with bonuses as follows -
£100 for no sick days in the month
£50 for turning up ontime every day
£10 a day for getting all allocated work completed

(The figures are just something I am working on so don't blast me if they don't add up)

People like Helen would be able to advise you best. She seems to run a tight ship with a number of employees.

kind of on my line Dave but i think you have 2 catergories that should just be one.

i pay attendance bonus
and
Work completed bonus.

it is worked out by weeks not day, so the difference between having 1 day off sick then getting 4 days bonuses to 1 day off sick to a whole week bonuses dropped is a massive difference.

the bonus is half of the basic salary so they will want to work for it. it has been effective for me

Do you give them any leeway with the attendance bonus. Say they were 10 minutes late, is that the bonus gone for that week?

i don't have strict times dave, i have schedules of work, as long as the work is done then they get there bonuses and that is classed as a full day .

but the way i see it, if they do more they earn more, its a win win for everyone?

pay them 8.50 a hour, x 2 = £136 a day

if they didnt do that or just met it, its just gonna cover their wages, they dont have to work any harder as theyll get paid the same whatever like

on a % split way they would have to pull in some good  money so they cant say oh we didnt get much done today as they wont of earned much either

Yes, but the £8.50 is a max figure made up of mininum wage (about £5.50), completed work bonus and good attendance bonus. If you allocate the jobs properly they will stil have to work to a good rate or they won't get their completed work bonus.
