Hosereel connection threaded.
« on: May 28, 2008, 08:14:19 pm »
I have a hosereel like the ones gardiners sell bolted to the floor in the van,i noticed it leaking only slightly today so took off the DI to hosereel pipe. The hosereel end has a brass fitting that screws onto the hosereel and when i took it off the plastic thread on the hosereel was bare with hardly any thread left on it,i`ve managed to get by short term but i would like to know if i can buy the plastic peice that runs through the middle of the hosereel or have i got to buy a new reel.Thanks.

don,t buy a new reel,i ended  up doing that, you can buy just the middle shaft,it seems that 99% of the hose reels are all the same, have a shop round and save yourself £60

I thought that part was quite strong and have had no problems with it there. I used ptfe tap around it to secure it on.
Can you not retap the end with a smaller thread? maybe down to 3/4 '' as you can get female 3/4'' to male hoselock adaptors and fit that on. You can get taps from a local diy / iron mongery. It would be quite easy to do. If you cant manage, you could post it to me to do for you if you want.

Seeing as you are online andrew and you have a reputation as an engineer, why don't suppliers take any interest in the electric reel concept?

It's made a big difference to the way I work and I;m sure it would for others too. Why with your rep for engineering haven't you pursued this?

Good point.

I am not an engineer though.

The other guys in the company are and there are other things that the company does which keeps them very busy.

This would be a very major undertaking for any company. Design, developement, testing, tooling for manufacture would be very costly to produce a viable product. The reallity is that the window cleaning market is actually very small when considering products like these. The end product would probably be far too pricey for any real uptake by the window cleaning fraternity.

You have got me thinking now though  :)

There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

And just when you went to all that trouble & expense someone would come up with a diy one for a tenth of your retail price! :-\

What's available at the moment (pirtek?) is £500 plus, and there is no gurantee that this would actually work for our application.
Surely any really good company needs it's own products. To be a mere retailer leaves you open to being undercut. In our little world Alex has excelled himself with poles and you with the freedom trolley and van mounts.

What about the freedom reel though? Retailing above £300 towards £400 a reel with a 12v motor attached powered by a 12v leisure battery.
You might not think you'd sell many, but you would only need to sell one for any one else who saw it working to realise that they couldn't let another day pass without getting one.
