I never knocked,

I used to put a leaflet through the door with a quote for the drive on the back in black feltip pen (Dont do it near a upvc door or you may have a sleepless night and a couple of hours work the following day!!!   :-X )

do a cheap price for a clean only, then when they call you offer the re-sand aswell. That way you will entice a few more people than you might quoting for the full job at a higher price.

sorry i cant be more helpfull,
one thing you might try is creating a story along the lines of "I always get work when people see me doing a job and so i will offer a 50% discount (erm 25% cough cough) to the first person on the street who books me. Working this way saves me money on advertising and you know i will do a good job for you as its going to be used to show my services off to your neighbours".

I think thats the way I would go myself.

Hope it went well, we do the same every night with 15 guys and gals. Be cheerful, never start by saying "sorry to bother you", jus a 30 second pitch.

Company name, from (area)
What we do for you.
Free no obligation survey and fixed price quote available
Get a telephone number, name and finally (the most important bit)....

When will you and your partner, wife, hubby be available.

Even a small amount of cash will require her to speak to him. she will not feel confident to make the decision, he will have to get the nod from her. Go back at a dedicated time, see them both and save yourself a lot of time and re-calls. Never get into a conversation about the job, you are out there to canvass, get on with that and come back later for an appointment. If you are going to sell as well make the there and then, book a time and stick to it.
ONCE you are there, ALWAYS get a yes or no answer, ASK if they want to go ahead. Great phases like

" apart from the price (which I havn't given you yet), is there anything else you need to know to make a decision today"?

If you are busy, you will not have time to keep ringing or visiting, get an answer.

100 doors = 5 possibles = 2 < 3 appointments = 1 sale.

and when they say " I'm havin my tea", go away, smile and tell them you will come back again.

If they say OK...thats not a no. If they say NO forget them.

NEVER SHOW OR OFFER A LEAFLET UNTIL THERE ARE NO OTHER ALTERNATIVES, Its a cop out when they say, leave your information with me. Our canvassers do not carry them. Better to go back on the same doors next week and drop leaflets. This reminds them you came last week and sewed the seeds.
Happy hunting and always smile..... your are right, they are they miserable ones.

lol,

Its not when your up and running but for those that have to make a start its a cost effective way with money tight and time available.

Its not a long term strategy in my eyes but better than sitting and waiting for the phone to ring.

I did leaflets the first year but they have to have your landline and address to get any response
