Eleanor Roosevelt (wife of the American president) probably said it better than anyone else I can think of.

"Only a man's character is the real criterion of worth."

No one is "only" a window cleaner. Anyone who thinks it, much less says it out loud for other to hear, says much about themselves and NOTHING about you or any other window cleaners.

when I get that sort of comment all that goes through my head is that theyll stay in their little job and leave me alone to earn what I earn

I think anyone who cleans for a living is looked down on , after all if you are removing dirt you must be a commoner !  We all know the bennefits of this trade ,and if people look down on you does it harm your bank balance ?  Dave you are a top bloke and from talking to you and seeing your posts you have my respect mate  ;D

tempting at times but to stop yourself looking a hypocrite or yellow you would need to do that to everyone who comments. It's alright being a fighter when it suits, but once you start it becomes a 24/7 state of mind. And there are so many  more enjoyable things to do in life, than spending time looking over the shoulder.

Not really jonah. I've never got off on ruining someones day. Fortunately, i've always been around people who knew better. I realised pretty quickly that it only takes a moment to shatter illusions.

I just laugh it off.  They are obviously ignorant.

Had one once, a shop we clean I walked in to collect payment, a 'lady' customer made a comment along the lines of 'where's your rags and newspaper ha ha ha'

I replied 'I left the in my holiday home, ha ha ha'

Smiled smugly, then hopped back into the RS6 - the look on her face (I'm not rich by the way, but do ok).

The way I see it is, if everyone thought we were 'just window cleaners' then they are not likely to start up, so, more work for us.

Exactly right.  In my mind, its good if people think "only a window cleaner".  If people only knew about this business, everyone would do it.

my little sister got glassed. cowards method of fighting. if you cant back your self to take some one toe to toe then dont bother!! if you glassed some one in 1960's london you would be killed by the firms. but now a days its wimps first reserve. ''look at me i'm a tough guy, rather than risk them hitting me back i'll slice them open and render them useless so ive got time to mouth off''

i clean a pub where every time i go inside for payment i get the remark hes only a window cleaner , i sblack person and smirk to myself thinking if only you knew what its all about then perhaps you wouldnt coment and make snide remarks , how do you put up with snide comments .

What I've done in the past is to ensure that at some future point, I engage them in conversation about something really intelligent.  Most of us have our pet subjects that we know enough about to pull it off.  I a decent time interval is allowed to elapse, they will not link their disparaging remarks to the intelligent conversation.  It can show by example that it is possible to do a menial job but be a reasonably intelligent person.  You can educate them and they won't even know that you have done it.
