I am having real problems with sash windows
These are the only windows that i cannot figure out how to do run free! I have searched old topics and tried to follow a blow by blow account of how to clean them but they still run! nearly always the top of the bottom sash so it is definately the dirt between the two sashes ..... please can someone tell me how (point by point) to clean sash windows and get a half decent result when they are real dirty ..... pretty please!

Do the top sash all around the house then start back where you were started and do the bottom sash.

if this fails, give up.

Would turning your brush upside down work? And give it a good scrub and clean? Let it drip before doing the lower part?

Use a brush that will splay under the bottom part of the top sash frame so that you can reach in properly to clean it right from the initial clean. After a couple washes you should have no problems with any dirt lodged there running down onto the glass below.
When you've cleaned the top sash, run the top edge of the brush along the bottom of the top sash frame to catch the drips when you start to clean the bottom half of the sash window. Then you don't have drips from the top sash running onto the bottom sash once you've finished cleaning the whole window.

what about when it is a one off clean? How do you get a run free finish when you dont want to upside-down scrub and rinse scrub and rinse?

Sash windows are probably the hardest to get clean initially because of all the trapped dirt, cobwebs, etc. If you are doing them purely as one offs, make sure you charge double just to cover the extra time involved. I personally wouldn't bother cleaning sash frames (even at double price) just as a one off job because it isn't worth the hassle.

i dont get this i can see why they could be a problem but i dont have any trouble.This week i have done 7 properties with sash windows.Four are modern houses with "fake "sashes and the other 3 are the genuine article ,19th century original glass ,6 foot by 3 foot mther hubbards,no probs on any ...and one was a first clean(modern fakes).What am i doing RIGHT

about 75% of my work is sash windows & the best tip i can give you is to use a rectangular brush with 2mm pencil jets (not a crinkle-monofilament though). vikan rectangular are good brushes for these windows. I used to have the same problem when i used oval with fans.

I have a place a I do every 8 weeks and it now comes up fine took ages to get good though.

I also have a very large property that is done about once a year.  Very bad frames.  With this one I do all the windows and then go back over with a back back and redo and lower windows that need it.  I make sure that I don't go up to the top of the bottom frame on the second pass though.  Even redoing the windows with a backpack is still much faster than ladders.  The site is a 2 day job so windows have time to dry.

If your looking at a one off clean, well then you either have 2 do them twice second time only the bottom half not going to the top of the frame, or get your ladders out, or do them from the inside trad.

if you use pencil jets that spray over the bristles  like just above the
topmost bristles  no way can you do a spot/run free job
i tried and failed
jets in centre of brush work well
