Upholstery Vanish
« on: October 26, 2007, 09:29:14 am »
Anyone come across this/ Custy spilt water on new suite and treated with this and has left some white marks. Any ideas? All I know is its a pale coloured chenile type material (though this is what custy told me so could be anything).

Yes I had this a few months ago, they have bleached their sofa plain and simple. Vanish contains a small amount of bleach and they have gone a bit mad with it.

Pete if it is synthetic or good part synth then it may just be residue wick back. You can tell by giving it a rub with a clean towel misted with an acidic type rinse,if the white has removed when dry then just give the area a full rinse using your hand tool and an acid rinse.

I find that on upholstery this is normally the case.

Followed advice and custy called back when dried (did'nt have hair dryer with me) to say mark had got wider (ie over area I had cleaned). Should I clean whole suite with same method?

Pete do youknow the fibre composition?
Have you checked backing of fibre.
Where the extended area has gone white after your treatment was vanish also applied to that area.
Have you taken any pics you can post?
Its hard to advise unless have more info.

The answer to all Paul is no. It's a chenile but don't know if its cotton, viscose or acryrlic. My guess would be cotton from feel.

Suite was purchased from Argos and they could'nt tell me any more either. Label simply says get a professional or mix some washing powder with water and wipe off with water (assune its not drayon then).

When I looked at it it looked a classic residue from vanish. About a 2 inch diameter cirlce. I cleaned with M/S and rinsed off with water and now circle has expanded to around 8 inches (ie the area I cleaned). If you have an Argos catalogue its on page 171 (bottom of page) not that this will tell you any more. Going back tomorrow.

Pete lift the sofa on its back and you will see the label with all the fibre contents on  it ( usually the case with argos) and at a guess it will be polyester & Rayon mix and Rayon will be around 75% of the volume.
If this is the case ring me you have my number.

Pete, first of all these Argos suites are pretty crap. Most of them have compressed cardboard frames and over wetting can cause cellulosic browning on certain panels.
Not saying this is what your problem is.
Was the suite very dirty? did you clean the full panel or just the bit that was affected?
When you return I would advise to take with you a disclaimer laying out that you are trying to remedy a problem caused by the customer. Only continue further after they've signed it. Might not stand up in court but usually puts people off trying it on.

John

The suite is brand new. Certainly does'nt look like browning, more residue based which is why I was'nt concerned. Blimey, all this grief for a £45 job (and it was far from local). Only cleaned localised patch and they come in units that attach to each other rather than a conventional suite.

Missed your calls re solution hose but still want. Can we speak tomorrow?

Did ring you last week but see you had flight delays.

Wasn't suggesting that was browning just warning people to be careful cleaning these.
If you clean just a patch on a lot of materials you sometimes end up with a tide mark. Clean the whole area up to a seam.
Speak to you tomorrow.

Hi Pete

I would certainly agree with John about cleaning the whole panel or even better chair !

It could be a pH sensitive problem, try dabbing with neat acid rinse on a towell.

Cheers

Clean the base cushion to get it to match in.

Tell her its a problem either with the fabric or the vanish that SHE USED.

Tell her to go back to Argos about it.

Doug

I used MS to clean and water to rinse so I should'nt have affected the PH but I spose the vanish may well have done but would this make the mark bigger?

Hi Pete

The Vanish will certainly be alkaline and the MS may well have been buffered alkaline as well.

Cheers
