I have just taken on 2 new cleaners who have been on new deal with the job centre, what a result, the job centre are paying half their wages to me for the next six months aswell as paying me for their uniforms and shoes which I usually give to me staff free.

Is that some sort of new incentive that the job centre is offering?

No, it's been around for a good few years, normally only available for people who have been out of work for 6 months or more.

It's an incentive to get employers to try out staff at little cost to themselves before committing to them on a permanent basis.

The job centre will also pay for any training for them.

it's got it's good and bad points, yes they do pay towards training and salary and they phone every week for an update on how the person is getting on. It's a sad fact though that some of these people only take the job because their benefits will be stopped if they don't, so on the whole they aren't likely to be long term employees.

I deliberatly look for people that have until now not really had a proper job, I have found that there are hundreds of 23-30 year olds that bumed around at school and are now realising that they have to knuckle down and work like the rest of us or face a crappy life but when they go to a job interview and say they have not done anything since leaving school then they stand no chance and therefore when I offer them a full time job they are extremely greatful and eager to do well. Sure its a headache sometimes when you have to explain everything but I find most are just lacking confidence and belief in themselves, so it can be quite rewarding when you do employ a suposed no hoper and end up with a happy, confident loyal employee

I know someone who has been unemployed for years, he told me he would need to be paid over 20k a year to make it worth his while working because of what he would lose in government payments 

If you have found some good workers from this scheme you're lucky, have any stayed beyond the 16 weeks yet?

The problem why people need 20k is that when they had a job they were living to that or above that standard.

They are commited to a mortgage etc

You can get your rent made up if you take a low paid job but not your mortgage.

Once you start work perhaps your insurance policy stops paying.

It becomes a catch 22 situation . With 100k plus mortgages the situation is getting harder.

So what should people do on loosing a job.

Sell Family home, move into rented accomodation., then they are in a position to take a job at £6 an hour.

No, this idiot has got to 40 years old and never really worked!! EVERYTHING is paid for him. He would need 20k a year to make up what he loses in benefits.
Last time I spoke with him ( about a year ago ) he was really happy as the doctor had just prescribed him as being depressed, this apparently is the best way to keep the DHSS off your back, he called it The Holy Grail.

But thats gone off topic slightly.

Agreed that some people do need a nudge and New Deal works for them, especially the genuinely depressed or substance abusers.

It's a sad fact that this industry does attract its far share of wasters so each time we take on new staff we're taking a risk
