Am I doing the right thing?
« on: September 17, 2007, 08:37:25 pm »
I've done as much research as I can and am about to buy a new machine tomorrow. I can get a new Powerplus with wand and 75ft of hose for £1821 inc VAT. Would love to buy a Ninja or Scorpion but they are so much more expensive and out of my reach. Don't fancy second hand or reconditioned as a know that with my luck I'll buy a lemon. Is there any doubt the 2 x 3 vacs and 120psi can handle that length. Am I buying the right thing? Just want a machine to do domestic properties and be able sit at the bottom of the stairs.

Yes, the Powerplus is a great machine for that sort of work!

2x3 stage will be at the limit of it's performance @ 75' so you'll need an extra dry pass or two.

You will also find that 50ft will clean most typical homes, so 75' will rarely be required. When I was running 2 x 3 stages and 100psi I think I needed extra hose perhaps once or twice a year.

Prochem machines, like the above mentioned Ninjas, are the backbone of our industry. Prochem have an excellent dealer network with first class back up at all levels. You've probably got a free training course included in the package, but if not, ask for one before you make the deal :-X

I'm confident that you'll be delighted with your new machine.

Safe and happy cleaning :)

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Looked at the Rhino but a couple of dealers said there are delays getting parts.

Ashby's were wonderful on the phone and have a great 2nd hand Ninja package for the same price as a new Powerplus, but only the 135psi version.

Leaning towards Prochem at the mo.

Have you tried Alltec's Advantage, Good Machine and is within your price range. You'll get a free course as well.

Top Customer Service aswell.

If you buy the powerplus your better buying the heat and run to but that will set you back another £400+but you need some kind of heat.Personally find the powerplus to big a machine a machine that size should have a bigger pump i think you should go for the powermax nice and light easy to lift up and down stairs.

The list goes on and on. The machine you're quoting should be able to handle everything you come across in your first couple of years.

You will be learning during that period, not just about cleaning, but marketing and general business management, so you would be wise to remain within your budget  -  others may disagree  -  focus on your plan and whatever professional advice you've been given.

You need some time, to discover whether, or not, this is really for you and by staying in control of your " purse " you will not get yourself into difficulties, if you don't get, the return, or enjoyment you expect.

Most start small and learn, others gamble and pray !

until a few years ago all there was were 2x3stage & 100psi machines, everyone used them and did  an excellent job, its just recently that all these super-powered machines have been on the scene.

now everyone thinks they can't manage without them and unless they have one they will not be able to give a professional clean.

Buy a powerplus and get stuck in, it'll do a great job ;) ;)

You machine is your money making baby.  You want the best money can buy.  Time is money and the more power is quicker cleaning and faster drying.  For something that could make you £50k plus per year buy the best.  If you havent the money then wait till you do, at the end of the day another £500 isnt a lot of money.

Mike is half right because we all want more power so buy wisely.

IMO 75ft is too long for a 2x3 stage and 100psi machine.  Very poor recovery esp for a dirty carpet esp in winter.

You could buy the Ninja and get the 400psi upgrade.

I had a 125psi 2x3 stage vac machine for a good while and ran 75' from it occasionally. Not ideal but did the job with a little extra elbow grease.

If you have to run a machine of that power with those hose lenghs make sure you pre vac thoroughly, lightly mist prespray or m/s whatever your chosen product, agitate and rinse (sometimes more than once and several dry passes).

Takes longer than higher powered machines but job can be done well given the time and effort.

Hope this helps,
Jason.

Hi

You want a reliable machine so I would buy a basic machine new rather than higher spec second hand.

With the machine in the house 25 ft is the norm, 50 ft for upstairs which is usually not as dirty, just use more dry passes & use an air mover.

You are not going to use 75ft unless doing very big houses.

If in a years time you can afford a better one keep the old one as a back up.

I agree with the others that 50' is usually the max in a house, even modern 4 beds - it would have to be very large house for 75'.

and when you put machine at bottom of stairs - you get more hose upstairs to use if you hang it vertically (as part way down the hall) rather then run the hose literally up the stairs. Obvious I know, but maybe not so obvious when you are new.
