I've pretty much decided on purchasing the Extracta Exel as my first machine and saw these items for sale on Ebay.  Could you tell me if it's a good buy or whether I should rather buy new (with warranty).

Cheryl, Its not bad kit and almost everything you will need but £2500 starting bid is a bit steep for second 2nd hand hence no bids perhaps? Saying that i believe these machines to be very reliable but i'd shop around and visit Carpex to see different machines and maybe find a bargain.

IMO its not worth more than £2500 tops.  Only things of value are the machine (needs to be 2x3 vacs) and the scrubber and blower.  Consider this, you may not like the scrubber or the wands as there old design (the wands that is).

Also the guy says it made him a lot of money and its possible for you to make £800 per week BUT theres only 50 odd hours on the clock.  I smell a rat.

Why dont you contact John or Brian at extracta and ask if they have any ex demo/showroom exels for sale. You may save a considerable sum, and it wont have left their sides !

I've got fourarms like Popeye and find the Exel heavy  .

I would seriously suggest you go and see someone locally who got one and try moving it.

I used to lift one in and out of LDV 400s and Transit Box vans on a daily basis. Bear in mind that they are only 1lb heavier than a Cheyene. There is a knack to lifting them, the handles are placed correctly, but if one lifts it in another fashion it "would" appear heavy.
Dont forget, a very light weight machine will probably be built lightweight ie not as sturdy, also the plastic variety machines are not as repairable as fibreglass, fibreglass is FULLY repairable, roto moulded isn't. Food for thought.

I have had two Excel's over the years and found them excellent machines...still have one still going strong

At an asking price of £2500 I would consider buying a new one...there can't be that much difference in price

If you are looking for a a quality portable machine look no further than The Alltec "Advantage" which is a superb machine with twin vacuum motors, a 100psi pump and heater as standard. Your customers will love it as it is very impressive looking and does the job it was designed for. I've looked around at the 'lighter' models, but when you've finished with all the 'additions' such as inline heaters etc., they're are all much of a muchness and undoubtedly I'm going to find any of them heavy to lift.

I've also heard there's a knack to lifting them, a bit like tilting a pram up a kerb with a flippin heavy baby in it.  I'm looking for a van with a low load on it like a Caddy with the theory of less height, less strain.

I'm going to put a post out to meet up with any cc's in the Lancashire/Manchester area as cc'ing is one thing in theory (passed my ncca last week oh yeah oh yeah), but another in practice.

I'll give the guys at Extracta a call, this sounds the best route, thanks for the advice Glynn, your a gem.
