Advice on cleaning a suite please
« on: May 15, 2007, 05:25:28 pm »
Hi all

A woman rung me today and asked me to come and look at her sofa etc... When I got there she told me it marks incredibly easily. On the front arm of the chair she says her hubby spilt some water and the mark from it has not gone away!! She also spilt milk on the puffy and even though she tried to clean it off herself she has had no luck and the mark is still there.

I did a colourfast test and all seemed well. The small booklet she got with the suite said it could only be dry cleaned only. Normally I would have still wet cleaned but didnt want to incase I make more water marks on it.

So I took some pics for you fellas to look at and would appreciate some input if possible. Does anyone recognize this fabric and can it be wet cleaned ok? Thanks in advance!

 :)

Looks like Chenelle (spell) to me, if so this can easily be HWE, BUT you must brush out the tool marks as you clean!

Are there any specialised brushes you would recommend or would a terry towel do just as well? Sky

Terry towel will do fine, it will help to dry the fabric whilst removing your tool marks ;)

This is not a chenille...it looks more like a woven rayon fabric from the picture and Yes...it well may be a dry clean only job...be careful.

Did you do a burn test?

It wont identify the construction but at least you will know the fibre you are dealing with.

Good place to find a loose fibre is inside the zip on one of the cushions.

any doubt walk away thats what i do, on average if i get say 10 suites in i'll probably do only 2 or 3. i've heard so many horror stories that have cost the tec thousands. i do all the routine tests (thanx dfs) & if i still don't like the look of it i'll decline it. plus i hate doing suites anyway! & theres to many easier jobs to do. you've got ask yourself is it worth the risk!!!!!!!!!

Charlie...

the answer is Yes...it can be worth or should be if you are charging the right price....

this price should reflect the knowledge required to be able to clean fabrics safely and efficiently

derek, regards to you.  depending on what it the suite is & the general size of it reflects my price's. eg;- 3-p-s £135- to £150- standard. the big humdingers roughly £180-. the suites i normaly clean are 8/10 previous customers. i've built up over the years a profitable customer base so generaly i know what i'm cleaning. put it this way i'd rather clean a carpet any day compared to suite, unless it checks out, & i'm happy with it.  char

is it poss that suite pictured on this topic could be FRIEZE! it certainly looks like it, rough raised fibrous surface made with uncut loops that make a course napped fabric?   char
