Very Strange dye on upholstery
« on: September 13, 2006, 08:29:44 pm »
Cleaned a suite today.
DFS cotton/poly mix soft flatweave run of the mill in gold colour.
Done the pre tests as usual on quote with no probs.
Gets there today and the customers says OH Ive spilt some yogurt on the base and it has stained can you look at it.

By the base she means the cotton base were the seat cushions lay.
This is the usual beige cotton covering with the DFS logo plastered along it.
The stain is about 5 inches by 4 inches and is a red/pink pastel colour.
I ask what she used to remove the stain. Usual comment "vanish".
I tell her as it is cotton prob the stain is set in but will see what happens afier cool water extraction.

I extracted with cool water .No change.
Added wool safe m/s and extracted. The pink stain spread.
Used Browninmg prescription with short dwell. The  stain spread more.
Used Prochem Red RX and the stain spread more.

I dried it off after a hot water rinse with turbos to find a bigger Red/pink stain.

I think its an indicator dye but I have never come across this before. And with out removing the cotton base to look at the foam beneath I dont know if it is transfer off the cushions.

Just wondered if any others have come across this?

Just keep going until  the pink stain has covered the entire base...then tell the custy that it's meant to be pink but was so dirty it just appeared beige...

Paul,
Is this stain from the yogart or is it something inside the base?

My thoughts are usually on the base frames they use dakron poly fill
not foam.

Dave its not the yogurt it is either the base sheet or the cushion underneath.

I did a 4 spot test on a seperate part of the base with the customers permission.
1.ph 2.5
2. ph 4
3.ph 9
4 ph 12.5

All spots turned same colour.

Then i reversed the mix so put ph 12.5 on top of ph 2.5 etc with no difference.

Really strange.

I have the batch number and I am going to wtrite to DFS to see if the manufacturer can give me an answer.

If you have a CFR uphostery tool try pulling the material clear of the base and flushing the stain with lots of hot water. If the stain gains no more in size then its in the base the problem lies.

Dave tried that but it would not move out at all. I even tried CFR at 300 psi then 200 then 100 and dropped temp just to see if pressure and temp made any difference.
But no the pink area just kept getting bigger.
It was a real strange pastal pink colour too.

Paul, when the suite was made it could have ink signs on the back saying which part of cloth goes where. These sometimes can pull through fibres. A mare at times but thankfully rare! Have had this scenario before and if i can i put a white towel underneath and keep extracting until its gone. Just my advice.

Damian.

Thanks  Damien
I have had the situation you speak of many times before and can be a bit of a pain when not expected.
On this occasion though it is something different.
