Told i need a cis card
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:59:42 pm »
I have just done a builders clean for a largish building firm, sent in the invoice and was told i have to re-write the invoice, Instead of saying builders clean, i have to just put window cleaning.

They also said I should not of been allowed to do the job in the first place because i do not possess a CIS card.

They were not interested in health and safety at the time of the clean, but are now concerned about this invoice,

Its quite laughable really
Has anyone else been asked for a CIS card

I have a cis card but my last employer retained it when i left, as they had paid for it.

Its about 50 quid i believe, it goes along the same lines as the driving theory test, you get a booklet to study a week before then you have a multiple choice test on a computer, think you have to get 30 out of 34, its dead easy though, all common sense!

Dave,

A CIS card is free all you need is 2 passport photos fill in a form at the tax office then they send it.

The thing with the invoice is they can deduct 18%, which you can claim back at the end of the tax year ( unless it's changed)

Dave,

It might be an idea to put a post on the general cleaning section, there's a few on there that do builders cleans all the time

were you asked to sub contract the clean through the builder ? because you only need a cis card if you sub contract if not invoice them for the full amount & you are liable for the tax & they have the invoice as proof of payment

I was asked for one by a housing association after i had done the jobs.
I had to fill out a Risk Assessment for them even though i was told i didn't need to submit one after i had asked.
They then asked for this CIS.
I told them if they were prepared to pay for one for me, then i don't have a problem.
I reminded them i gave them all they asked for even after questioning them and they didn't seem bothered when they approached me.

I'm sure you don't need one Dave

Hi
I checked this out with the tax people if you are in general cleaning  ie not just for building cleans only you do not need one though most builders think you do they can pay your invoice in full.

we are not at present in the scheme but guess what the rat man would like to get us in it he thinks we are all on the fiddle!!

I have just phoned the cis helpline and was informed external cleaning is exempt from the CIS scheme , but clean just one pane of glass on the inside then thats where you will definately need one.

So in short

outside exempt

Inside card needed

Your right there all outside cleaning is exempt.

You can get a cis card free from your local tax office and takes around 5 days for you to receive it back you need the following

1 x photo passport size , proof of your national insurance no, passprt ,driving licence or a bill with your address on.

cis registration card: any body self employed can have one of these free and when you do any builders cleans the tax is deducted before you receive payment
