Backpacks??
« on: Yesterday at 06:05:54 pm »
Need some advice... My son-in-law is starting up soon and to get going he plans to use a backpack and barrels. I've been wfp over 20 years but never had anything to do with backpacks. So, any advice here from those who use or have used them would be much appreciated. He sent me this link to one he had seen online, I know the pole and brush etc wouldn't be up to what us experienced guys would use but it's a start- or is it? Anyhow, he's a lovely genuine lad who would appreciate the guidance. 🙂👍

If he can afford it a trolly is a much better option

Mind, he only has a small car so a trolley may be too big. 🤔

The advantage of a trolley is that the containers fit right onto the trolley, meaning there is no decanting water from the containers into the backpack. Downside is that it’s heavy and it can be a pain getting it in and out of the vehicle…..
You’ve posted just as I was about to post….if it’s not an estate car it will be a real PIA getting a trolley in and out.

Pure freedom nano trolly fits in a car easily they are expensive though but very light and compact , y
U can pick the trolley up with your little finger it’s that light ,obviously the barrels are heavy when full

I’ve just had a look at the link to the backpack….IMO that backpack is as good as useless for working with all day. You really don’t want to be working with a backpack ( they should be renamed😁 ) on your back. When it’s full of water it’s over 25kg, that puts a big strain on your back and neck, especially when you’re doing upstairs windows.  If he must go down the backpack route he’d be better with a Gardiner style one which has a carry handle.  Yes it can be heavy to carry if using without a sack truck, but at least you can put it on the ground when you’re cleaning the windows.

Most put them on a sack trolley not on there backs due to weight

I used to carry my one, point being the one in the link doesn’t have the option to carry it as it doesn’t have a handle.

Couldn’t be doing with trolleys or backpacks. Waste of time imo.

If you’re gonna do something, do it properly. Invest in some sort of van system even if you gotta borrow the money. Doesn’t have to be some top state of art system. Just produce 0ppm. But you gotta speculate to accumulate. You can’t cut too many corners. He’s either serious about it or not.

Yeah, I don't think he intends to put it on his back. 👍

When my van was off the road for about six weeks I kept my important jobs going by using my wife's car - a little Suzuki Sx4 hatch  in which I put 4 x 25L barrels and an old shurflo backpack (18L) in the boot (so 118L total). I could have put down the rear seats and carried four more if I had to, but didn't.

The backpack was bungee strapped to a little folding sack truck. Would never use a backpack without a sack truck.

Put the backpack on the floor and filled from the 25L barrels.

Kept me going.

It's a game of three halves!

This is the kind of initial setup I was thinking of. 👍.
He's not in a position yet to go 'all in'.

It's rather slower than a van mounted tank but it can get you started and you know that if you find you have to increasingly go back for fill-ups then you are doing well and know you need a van.

Being really organised is necessary. Fill up your barrels the night before, charge your battery and have a spare - that sort of thing.

It's a game of three halves!

Best trolly I have bought, ticks all the boxes. If he can't afford it then save up and get one because it will make his life alot easier.
