Anyone here ever have a tax inspection?

I believe Nigel (rip) got himself in a spot of bother. When he passed away, i googled his full name followed by "window cleaner" to try and find some details of his obituary and the very 1st listing that came up was the hmrc naughty list. For those who are not familiar with this, its a list of anyone who's been investigated and found  to have deliberately defaulted .Your name stays on it , viewable to all for 1 year. I dont know any more details, the list was incredibly long , and not in alphabetical order,i didn't have the time to wade through it. He wont be on it now.

And what’s interesting with most of these  prosecutions is it’s not just for  the last tax year it’s over multiple years  and many are beyond the 5 year tax record keeping period 😂

Because it's deliberate tax evasion.
It's a game of three halves!

Makes no difference they still don’t just look at one tax year , it’s not financially viable for them they will look back over many years or they have done from what my accountant tells me and the few people I know that have been investigated . Most people don’t avoid paying tax by accident it’s usually deliberate  ie taking cash and not declaring it ime sure a lot on here do this one , claiming expenses that aren’t legitimate and so the list goes on .

DD just said he had his investigation over only one year.

If 'most people don't avoid paying tax by accident it's usually deliberate' as you say then they are tax evaders.

And how will having inaccurate books from 20 years ago help anyone who is on the fiddle?

Think you will find an account as more experience in this field than a bunch of window cleaners it’s what they do for a living .

Some may inadvertently make mistakes in a tax return but many  take cash and don’t declare it , same with tips many on here have been boasting about tips but again they aren’t  declaring them  same as goods in kind all this us deliberate tax evades far as HMRC are concerned.

If you are running a legitimate business and keep records you can defend yourself and show accurate records to fight your corner.  Again this is advice from an accountant if you don’t have any records you can’t argue against anything that the inspector s say you owe you have to prove them wrong they don’t have to prove they are right .

You clearly have your own views and that’s fine but if you got investigated you would be taken to the cleaners as you couldn’t defend yourself, no big business get rid of there records after 5 years .

I'm not a big business. I run a 20 year old car, a 14 year old van and a 44 year old motorbike, I keep accurate records. No expenditure on big ticket items that I can't explain.

If people are taking and not declaring cash then they may well suffer from the attention of HMRC especially if a disgruntled ex employee/subbie dobs them in.

Nothing in my financial life beyond 5 years ago that keeps me awake. If HMRC point to a significant expenditure from beyond 5 years ago I can explain what it was and how I got the money.

It wasn't from tax evasion that's for sure.

I'll take my chances in line with government rules. In a past life I was a Finance Director for 8 years. Dealt with accountants where I needed to and my dad was an accountant.

Others can do as they feel necessary.
