Electric hose reel
« on: December 05, 2025, 05:57:09 pm »
I’d like some more information about this please. Have some of you got one, where can you buy them and are they any good ?
Does the hose get snagged on things that my 8mm does, I’ve had a lot of hassle this week with my temper going  very  quickly.
I’ve had kinks in the pole hose the main hose getting stuck on buildings, sticks a kink in the hose , but I always unwind the reel , but it just gets snags  and  water  stops. I know they cost from about £600  +vat.
How are they wired up ? I have a battery charging  from the van so it doesn’t need charging , although a couple of days recently the pump controller has been reading L , so I think a more powerful battery  will be needed too.
Would like to hear your thoughts about this , many thanks .
Cheers Rich

I've never had a manual reel, and I can't get my head round it when I see people using them, when there's an alternative out there where you just push a button and it winds up itself.

The jobs poope as it is, if somethings put there that makes it a wee bit less poope, then it's a no brainer.

Wouldn’t be without mine, no way.

Had them for years, and just upgraded my old water works electric reel for the new chain drive one, Black Friday deal.

Also giving micro bore a go this time rather than 8mm.

3 things that would make your working day easier and more efficient....

Electric reel
Microbore hose
Hot water

I use a PF reelmaster which has slow start and snag protection built in. Its over 7 years old now and still going strong. It just wires up to your system battery. Very easy to fit. Microbore hose is just so much easier to manage than minibore! Couple that with hot water pumping through it just makes it warm and manageable especially during the autumn/winter months.
price higher/work harder!

If you switch to electric it is probably best to use 6mm hose so the motor won't have to work too hard.

I use a good quality (Hannay) van mounted reel which (to me anyway) does not seem hard work. Recently changed from 8mm to 6mm hose and it has made it notably easier to reel in.

If I went down the electric route to me the PF reel looks the best, though it is more expensive.

Dazmond , how do you get hot water in the tank? Is it purified too? I use a 8mm hose pipe and a smaller through the hole to the brush, although I might get a new hose reel as this one is fixed together in about 2 places.  Also how is it wired up, I can send a pic of the system that charges the pump  if necessary . Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your replies everyone .

Here's an outlier.

I have 40m  reinforced pole hose connected to 60m if old microbore on my Claber hand reel. Light as a feather.

Why people use microbore let alone minibore is beyond me.

But then I don't use a pump controller either.

And I use an immersion heater for warmth.

I think the main difference is it doesn’t come with soft start and anti snag?

I think I’ve answered this one before? I don’t use pole hose on the reel because I reckon it’s more of a trip hazard on pavement’s etc due to it not lying as flat on the ground compared to micro/minibore.

How is the immersion heating fitted to your tank, is it a separate fitting or on the lid of the tank, got any pics or dealers that sell them?

Actually , no need , I’ve just looked at water heaters in a few websites, far too much money for me, 3  grand plus vat 😧

Mine lays just as flat. It's the streamline reinforced pole hose which I use. Especially when using warm water.

Look, I'm not saying not to use electric reels - I like an easy life and being able to loop up to 40 metres in my hand when necessary is great. And being able to wind in with much less weight resistance is great too.

Repairs are easy too. Put in a plastic joiner and shrink wrap using electric wire sleeves is easy.

But I emphasize I don't employ and I have a self built system so know my kit inside out.

Lightness and ease and simpleness is king for me. I never did more than 4k a month and now it's nearer 2k so robustness and hard wear isn't paramount - but taking wear off of my body is.

It's a game of three halves!

An immersion heater plus fittings is a couple of hundred quid. Should be fitted as close to the bottom of the tank as possible using a mechanical flange.

As KS says - it's a job for a competent DiY'er.

I got a special 2KW instead of 1 or 3KW for about £100 but it is exactly the same dimensions as standard.

This means I can use 13amp extension lead and 13amp plugs without them being at their limits.

It's fine for repeat cleans, soft hoses and winter proofing.

But if you want to do lots of first cleans and green plastic you want HOT not WARM.

It's a game of three halves!

That sounds a much better price, have either of you got a picture of how they’ve  been fitted ?
The reason I whinged about the ones for sale on a few suppliers, I’m not doing as much work now, after I had that fall just about 41/2 years ago ,and had to have half my left skull removed to  stop the  inside bleed . So during my off for sickness , a lot of customers got a new wc . Enough of that it’s been on before during my sickness , but’m back to work which I enjoy doing .

I run with 100m Exceed's 8mm outside diameter PU hose on both reels. Never had any problem with it and is easy to pull about.
