Would you rather…
« on: January 17, 2022, 07:35:33 am »
…be a traditional window cleaner, (let’s say the WEF, EU, Boris and all the other ‘leaders’ banned WFP in the name of climate change or some other nonsense)

Or,

Look for another job?

Happily be traditional again, especially if everyone else gave up! Easy pickings get a nice round all on foot from my doorstep, customers would understand that I can’t do veluxes or over extensions any more, get what they’re given!

Go full time with my international man of mystery job.

Think I’d be same, i hate getting the ladders off the van these days, everything about trad annoys me these days .

I do still do Inside work trad, I just wouldn’t have the patience to work full time trad.

Having said all that, if it meant window cleaners were like gold dust again (before wfp) then I might change my mind. £500 a day  ;D

Good question. I often think if I had to be trad I'd pack it up. But today I did a bit of trad and really enjoyed it. The windows came up cleaner than WFP too 👍
We look at them, they look through them.

You can’t be a real window cleaner if you didn’t spend some years trad    ;)

Although I can't say that "being a real window cleaner " is something I have ever aspired to be. I do it for money not pride.

It’s a badge of honour, to be a lonely window cleaner up a ladder in the freezing cold for a tenner  :D

I'd do trad, but it would have to be bungalows only.

Nowadays, any more than 3 steps up a ladder...I get a nose bleed!

There would be an exodus of window cleaners  ;D ;D ;D
so I would do a number of things .

1  start to rainwater harvest on my house , kids houses .

2  wfp tops  only   trad the rest

3  buy all the bungalows from the exodus of window cleaners.   do them trad

4   put all my prices up by at least 30%

Just as I was stopping trad in 2005 and 2006 timber decking was all the rage.

Some of them are now slimy, rotten and slippery. The thought of putting a ladder on them makes me blanch.

No thanks!

I do quite a bit of traditional work still so it wouldn't bother me too much if I had to use that method full time.   I would have to drop a few perhaps who would be too difficult/dangerous/time consuming to do with the ladder but I'd still keep the round mostly intact.

There would be one or two benefits in that I wouldn't have the hassle of purifying water anymore and lower costs related to buying the sometimes pricey WFP equipment.

That said there would also be some drawbacks of course in that very windy weather would become a problem and work would be done slower.  The frustrations of doing trad work like problematic detail work, leads in the rain, squeegee lines etc would also be intensified.

I do find though that customers of a certain age (as in the more elderly ones) seem to prefer the traditional method so maybe it would be easier to pick up new work if fully trad should more customers ever be needed.

15 years trad and 15 years WTP,
If I had to go back to ladders... I would because I've never had another trade or skill behind me.
As for employing staff trad you'd struggle to make a sensible profit.

If you went back to ladders it would feel and be like a totally different job, once you’ve taken 15-20 minutes to clean the side of a house when it used to take you 5-6 minutes you would have had enough. I regularly clean jobs that used to take 1.5-2 hours with the pole it’s more like 30-40 minutes.
You can be as quick as you like on a ladder once you’ve been over to the dark side it would all seem  like a chore.
