I would say it’s just an L5 style LPG heater or bomb waiting to go off fitted with a thermostat.

Dont do it...they are not safe....either fit an immersion if funds are tight or invest in a 9kw diesel heater with frost stat.....

I got one a few months back,Craig is his name.
Its an lpg heater and a few holes drilled in the van,one for filling the lpg bottle at a garage and one in the roof for the fumes to escape,he also puts a frost stat in so when it goes below a certain temperature it turns itself on and circulates the water back into the tank.
I see loads of guys using these but is important it has the vent in the roof.

Lpg is heavier than air so you need some holes drilled in your van floor too in case you have a gas leak.....

So for the frost stat to be on you’ve got to have the gas connected over night?  :o

That’s a big no for me. I used to religiously turn my gas off at the end of the day, if not between each job and I still nearly set fire to my van. 🔥

I think for us an immersion is the best option.

1 its cheap and 2 you can use it as an when required.

You might need it a handfull of times a year, diesel is just way over the top for what we need.

As for gas, no chance would i have a ticking time bomb in my van.

Each to their own,if installed properly and professionally there is no issue.
I could have done it myself  but gave me piece of mind to get a qualified professional to do it. ;D

First thing to ask the company who are offering the system is what is their Gas Safe registration number. Even though its lpg to offer a paid installation I believe they must be registered!

Are you sure some guy with a drill and hole cutter is a professional  ;D

Daz - why do you always try to make out anyone who does not want a 9kw heater system is hard up for money ?

My diesel system broke today , failed to start up twice  :o
So instead of asking myself and others for 2 weeks why ........

I just scrolled through the error menu , which I might add you only get on the cheap Chinese ones.  ;D

It told me the diesel pump had failed , I fitted one in 5 minutes for the cost of £15 and she fired right up .

So in 2 years now this nasty little heater has cost me £25.50

Makes no difference if it has a vent they are nothing better than a toy,if they were usable day to day we’d all have them they are not capable of chucking out 650-1000ltrs of water day in day out they aren’t made for it,it’s designed to give you a quick shower or rinse the dog off after a walk when he’s got muddy use it at your peril.

I had an L5 for over 7 years without issue , back then I would get through 500 a day , so they can do it .
But having said that , as NWH says they are nothing more than a camping shower , at the end of the day it’s up to you

Yeah that they maybe but they are robust and reliable enough to work hard and be on all day long,I have lights in my house when you drive about you’ll also see them in cars coming towards you at night  👀.
Why are they now being used in this industry and can be included on your insurance there’s the clue,if you are unsure about using an L5 style
Heater ask a good plumber a 5 minute chat will be enough for you to Chuck it in a skip.

i have to agree with nigel here...every gas engineer ive ever met told me lpg gas shower heaters are not safe to have in a van hooked up to a gas cylinder near a source of ignition(battery)......

i thought they were ok until i had a gas leak and an explosion......

When I first used 1 I loved it I couldn’t believe it I did a plastic wash down and it cut the time in half it would have taken with cold water, used it for about 2 weeks and then asked a plumber where he thought was the best place to mount it 🤣the rest they say Rodney was history he did everything but hit me lol.

have had about 6 cold water system's fitted by Craig over the past 7 or 8 years
He seems like a decent guy to me
Can't imagine he'd do anything underhanded

On a side note
Had a email from brodex yesterday offering hot water system's
Diesel or LPG gas !!

I've used Graic a few years back too,he uses them himself.
I now have a Brodex 650 RO DI  which was fitted by them in Liverpool back in February  and can honestly say its a great system dispite the negative feedback they get on here but I think they have changed managment.
I was going to go for the Brodex hot system but pulled out but then thought about it again.
There is other hot systems like the Pure Freedom ones, the Brodex one is the same as the Varitech ones, the Pure Freedom one is cheaper, there lots to choose from.
I'm happy with the LPG so far but its early days. ;)

They all use Webasto the landscape heater Grippa use is by far the lightest and smallest footprint the cabinet is plastic it weighs nothing,it’s 6-7” in width and can be mounted to your tank frame so  no extra space is compromised,
The uprights weigh a ton I had 1 it was ridiculously heavy,if you get 1 of these heaters get 1 from a supplier that knows where the last washer goes like Grippa.

L5 was it 🤣🤣 I rest my case I’m popping back out to the van again for more ice 🧊 lol, what most don’t realise is that those little gas heaters hate the cold even if you drain them down the internal pipes are so thin and brittle they crack in the cold including the gas pipe.

I think you will find it was a  BBQ and  bottle , not even connected at the time .
It was probably a gaslight bottle from BP , they don’t have a tap you can close , my old man bought a new bottle and put it in the garage , by the time he went to use it it was empty , another faulty push fit valve

On a side note , I was very tempted to treat myself to a Caddy on Friday , lovely condition but up at 200K , my mate who reset my ECU got it for £150 !
He said I could take it away for £3000 , drives like new apparently , which I can believe as VW build  quality is great against the others , why didn’t I buy it ?
Fully rebuilt gearbox too , but the fact the box was a DSG put me off no end .
A fellow window cleaner of mine had a cracker caddy with a DSG that went bang , he was quoted 5.5K for a rebuild   :o :o :o

Any van that’s done 100000 miles if it’s not recently had a clutch it’ll need 1 I replaced mine as it was starting to knock it didn’t go on me,same as the turbo the seals were leaking slightly so I replaced the turbo.
If I was even considering buying a high mileage van I’d much rather things like the above had gone and were replaced, the weight we carry you’ve only got to go over potholes half a dozen times and you’ll need to replace anti roll bar links or have them tightened up again.

On those toy like gas heaters you can’t see behind the gas inlet to see if it’s cracked you might just be lucky enough to smell a bit of gas before the van does an impression of a coke can full of mentos,on a sticky wicket using one of them.

Once you’ve had an automatic there’s no going back. I never thought I would ever have an automatic, then 7 years ago I was converted. We were looking for a new car for the wife and they only had an auto available for a test drive, Wow! I was sold, loved it, even more so with all those speed cushions all over town. Now both our cars and my van is automatic.
