4040 help
« on: November 13, 2022, 05:22:48 pm »
Hi all, i need some advice and pick some brains.. i had replaced a 4040 12 months ago because the old one had been in the van 10 years and held up strong and made water quick but the rejection rate was 45tds from 450tds at the tap. The new one brought the tds from 450tds to 6tds at the tap pressure 60psi, recently Severn Trent fitted a smart metre outside on the street to my mains supply which drop the pressure considerably maybe 35psi if i guessed. I can't work out if the 4040ro is failing or if the smart metre is causing me problems here but i am only producing 45 litres per hour and water production is painfully slow, the  ro TDS is now 11  but its just so slow to make water. Sounds like you now need a booster pump unfortunately.

35psi is really poor for what a 4040 needs. Good news though is that with a booster running you will get a lower tds so be using less resin.

How do you know when the ro is shot when the tds creeps up higher? So you think the ro could be ok?

Most 4040 membranes require a feed pressure of 100psi or 6.9bar to get the advertised rejection rate, so you would be best off looking at a booster pump as mentioned by Jonny 87. You may have a membrane that is 'low energy' and can operate at 5.5bar, but these tend to be a lot more expensive and again your feed pressure is still way below what is recommended.

In terms of your question about when the RO membrane needs replacing...
1. if the TDS is too high for pure water cleaning (usually replace at 10-20ppm, no more).
2. if the amount of pure water being produced has dropped off (i.e. your tank isn't filling as quickly as you need it to).

Some interesting things to keep an eye on...
Low pure water production + OK TDS = likely scale formation inside membrane, can sometimes be revived by cleaning with citric acid. Feeding an RO with softened water is recommended, usually 100ppm of hardness is the maximum recommended by membrane manufacturers.

High pure water production + poor TDS = likely chlorine burn on the membrane, either through not changing carbon pre-filter often enough or by carbon pre-filter being undersized for the flow rate.

Or get an HF5 membrane.
