heart scare.......so taking the rest of the week off....
« on: July 01, 2020, 02:44:30 pm »
so i got my missus to take me to hospital yesterday morning at 8am....id woken up at 4am and immediately knew i was in AF(atrial fibrillation)......i had 2 episodes of it 14 years ago but nothing since(when i was 34)...back then i had loads of heart tests and they couldnt find anything wrong....

hooked up on a monitor and my heart was reading 165....going down to 37 within in a minute or so and shooting back up again....they just couldnt get my heart rate back to normal sinus rhythm and out of AF....started off with beta blockers and an injection of blood thinners in my stomach, then a drip of flecainide...6 hours later they let me out..luckily about an hour later as i was taking the dog for a walk my heart went back to normal.....

today i feel normal as if it never happened..... ???.......anyway got to go back in 2 -4 weeks and theyll give me another ECG......they said if im still in AF   theyll give me a cardioversion(electric shock to the chest)but that wont be needed now hopefully.......

so im on beta blockers and blood thinners now....probably for the rest of my life now..... :o ;D

time to get a pill box now lads....... ;D

so im taking it easy this week.......no window cleaning until monday now........ive not had a week off since xmas!

Doesn’t sound good that Daz, must be scary as hell when your heart rate shoots up to it’s maximum and you can’t control it . Hope you make a speedy recovery mate. 👍

Crumbs Daz,

Good that you woke up! Was your heart racing like you’d been for a fast run?

Hope it gets better mate. Have a relaxing few days to restore the rythm!

yeah....its a horrible feeling...basically your heart is jumping around in your chest all over the place.....you start to go dizzy and its hard to catch your breath.....its dangerous too if you dont get urgent medical help as blood can pool and clot in your top chambers of your heart if you dont act quickly and get some blood thinners in your system.....your much more likely to have a stroke too.... :(

today i feel fine....as if it never happened.......

ive hardly touched a drop of booze or cocaine in 16 years mate......i do wonder whether the heavy drinking in my teens and twenties has caused some heart muscle damage though........

although i remember my mother taking me to the doctors after having a short episode of heart palpitations when i was a 10 year old kid....the doctor said it was normal for people to have palpitations and it was nothing to worry about....

Loads of people get heart palpitations mate, I’ve had them, wife also every now and then.

But when the heart is racing that high, it’s kinda out of control mate.

A friend in the gym was having the same as you, but his heart was going to near 200bpm when at rest! turned out to be something to do with one side of the heart not growing as big as the other. Long time issue undiagnosed until he was 37 odd.

He’s been operated on and now ok. But scary time for him.

Glad you're feeling better,  it happened to me about 7 years ago.  They shocked my heart to get it back into beat but must of done some damage to the heart as I was bad for about 2 years ( not getting a breath and sleeping all the time)
I had to sell up then start up again after about 3 years ago.
My doc did say it would happen again as your heart remembers it tho it hasn't happened again yet.

Daz’s heart rate normally leaps when he wakes up and remembers it’s a window cleaning day.
Mine normally sinks.

I have AF and take beta blockers, mine doesn’t race, it skips and misses beats (palpitations) bad news is you’ll most likely be higher risk for a stroke too. Apart from that I wouldn’t worry too much. Very common.

To be fair Dave, that seems to affect lots of people.

I get the odd day where mine palpatates. Usually when stressed though.

Not often people’s hearts tick exactly right all the time.

Hope your meds work and it doesn’t get any worse for you!

only 2% of people under the age of 65 have episodes of AF so its not all that common really...its shoots up to 7% if your over 65.....

i guess you take blood thinning drugs too then Dave?

my heart rate got up to 180 at one point when i stood up yesterday morning.... fluctuating anywhere between 37-180....i seriously thought i was gonna faint.....there is no way i could of gone to work in that state....the beta blockers should keep it from getting so high again.......

so are you in AF all the time dave?my heart beat has gone back to  normal now........

the odd palpitation is nothing like AF though mate from my experience.........when your heart is in AF there is no normal rhythm....its jumping around all over the place and you go very dizzy and cant breathe properly...its scary.....

Yeah I imagine it’s pretty frightening Daz.

A long while back I had a day where mine was palpating a lot throughout the day. I was stressed and got more stressed the more it did it.

If it happens again, I’m getting checked out. It was only a single occurrence.

Having said that, it palpatates every now and then, usually only for a second or two.

Never been dizzy with it though.

I find it’s stress that causes it.

Look after yourself mate. Take it easy and keep an eye on it.

Hi Dazmond,  i'm glad you went to  Hospital, to get it sorted, hope you make a speedy recovery, you can never be to
careful with your Heart when you get unusual symptoms, i went to hospital 10 years ago with chest pain, had loads
of tests  done over a couple of days, then they did an Angiogram, which showed 3 narrowed Arteries, they were
concerned with 1 of them which was a lot more furred up then the other 2,  So now on Statins, Beta Blockers, Blood thinners,
for the rest of my life, also had a Stent put in several years after the diagnosis, I'm forever grateful for the care i received,
and still receiving to this day, all the best to you Daz, have a good rest this week mate.

Yer mine’s pretty much in AF all the time, basically an irregular heart beat, never had it race like yours though, was prescribed an aspirin every day to thin the blood too but that went out of fashion. Been like it for years. I cycle and sometimes the heart goes all to cock on the first hill climb on a ride.
Couple of mates had theirs stuck flat out like yours, caffeine’s not good.

I had 2 similar episodes about 10 years ago now (I have a heart defect from birth)

Both times were symptoms of heart attack, chest pain, weakness, heart rate, dry mouth, feint, pale etc.

Went to hospital and all the tests and injections etc.

I put it down now to panic attacks but still not sure to this day as like I say I have a heart defect so always crapping myself when I get a twinge.

Very scary

Hope you are ok mate.

Hello Daz,
The same thing happened to me 20 years ago. You've got paroxysmal A F. It can start and stop when it likes!!
Mine was monthly and would last about one day. It became permanent four years ago. I am on the beta blockers and I take a small aspirin daily. I was fortunate enough then to be able to afford to see a top specialist. He said just carry on with working  life as normal and just like you, as there was no underlying problem it would not shorten your life. I did and he was right. I certainly wouldn't try running a marathon though. He also said there was no evidence that any previous event could have caused it. Some of the hospital doctors try to blame it on any previous habits.

its strange isnt it?the doctors dont really fully understand why it happens esp as ive not got a dodgy mitral valve...... ive had 3 episodes in 14 years.....all 3 times ive had to go in hospital and only flecainide in a drip has got me back to normal.......

im taking 2 x 5mg apixaban to thin my blood and 1 x 1.25mg bisoprolol(beta blocker) daily....

the beta blocker is making me feel a bit tired and achy but im not used to taking any medications so ill probably get used to it after a while...my resting heart rate overnight was 52......although it shot up to 135 when i got out of bed but has gone back down now....

drumming is when my heart rate gets up high.....i spent 2 hours on the kit yesterday and it got up to 155 at times(which is perfectly normal)......

Its not quite the same im sure but last year I had a scare with my heart or so I thought.  I went to pick my 3yr old daughter up out of bed and i got shooting pains in my chest, my heart area.  I couldnt get a full breath without more pain and quickly got a cold sweat on.  After a minute or so, I thought im not dead so its not a heart attack and stumbled back to my room and somehow managed to wife the wife.
I must admit the ambulance was amazing, they were at the door before she put the phone down.
However at this point the worse was over but they could see i clearly experienced something but they couldnt work out what.
The doc's at hospital put it down to a pulled chest muscle which I dont understand. Ive had pulled muscles and know how much they ache afterwards and this never did.
I went my doctors day after and booked in for a colesterol test etc and it came back OK and in the safe zone.
It does worry me as im not convinced by their answers and not sure if it will happen again. It scared the life out of me and never fancy going through that again.
So I can kinda sympathise with you bud, it certainly is a scare. Take it steady pal and stay safe n well

I went out and bought a blood pressure monitor and checked my pressure three times daily at the same time. The results (which i cant recall now) were really high. According to the chart and the internet, I should have been expecting a heart attack any time soon. So I checked in at the doctors and they gave me the same machine for a week and monitor, 😂😂 exactly what I had took in and suprise suprise the results were the same.  After handing the results in and after not hearing back from them, i went in to see the doc.  He simply said yes they are high but were not concerned by it.
Yep, thats reasuring as he didnt explain why they are not concerned

I reckon you had a muscle pain or something in your chest and then went into a panic attack which mimics heart attack symptoms.

the first time i got rushed to hospital i was sat eating dinner and i felt a bit feint, i looked in the mirror and i was pale. I got a twinge in my chest then started to panic, ended up with heart rate through the roof and went outside to lie down in the garden as i couldnt breathe and felt like i was about to pass out. Ambulance came and reckoned i was having a heart attack, by the time i got to the hospital i had calmed down and felt ok. Had all the tests and came back with nothing. This happened again about 6 months later.  I was a nervous wreck for quite a while after and went years with having twinges in my chest, each time i had one i panicked then i learnt to control it and never rang the ambulance since lol

I was put on beta blockers for anxiety but i stopped taking them, made me feel worse.

That’s the thing Adam, anxiety and stress = high cortisol and adrenaline levels = bad for the organs and body .

Staying at relaxed as possible helps with all health issues.

Obviously stress isn’t always the cause, but my word does it wreak havoc with the body.

When I was suffering severe anxiety as a young 20 year old, my cortisol levels were through the roof, I felt ill all the time, horrible symptoms.

Since being anxiety free,  my body feels much, much healthier.

Hello Daz
I have never had any side effects, but I was and am still on 2 tablets of 80mg of sotalol per day. One in the morning, one at night. I suspect your one heavier dosage per day is not working for you. Don't be afraid to tell your doctor you would like to change, perhaps later if it ever becomes permanent, you've got years yet!! I was the same as you, I never took them until I had a phase and it did not hurt. There is no need to take blood thinners unless you are having a phase. Be advised, AF and the flu don't agree. Start having the flu jab, and if you get the flu make sure you keep up the fluids. Mine started when I was 50, it only went permanent three years ago I am now 71. Best of luck, you'll be fine!!

I've never had my cortisol levels checked but I've had anxiety/depressive episodes since being a teenager. It peaked in my 20s then as I've got older I've learnt to live with it so it doesn't take me over as easily. I still get panic attacks and anxiety in certain stressfull situations but usually milder than full blown I think I'm going to die ambulance inducing attacks.

You could always get a pacemaker.

Get a hot blood one rather than a cold blood one, because they work quicker and better!

Seriously, take it easy.

After feeling like c**p for about 3 years I was finally diagnosed with AF and angina last summer after a blue light dash to A & E.
Since then I've had 3 cardioversions that didn't work and I'm now waiting for a pacemaker - a long wait under the circumstances.
I'd planned to work untill I was at least 70 and I'm sure you thought much the same, but.........the time has come, Daz to take a long hard look at your life. Your health is by far your biggest priority.
The symproms you described can be down to your condition, but if you feel they are caused by the tablets your taking, have a word with your doctor and they will try something else. DO NOT stop taking them.

ive not got AF constantly.....ive had 3 episodes in 14 years thats all......

all 3 times flecainide in a drip has got my heartbeat back to normal eventually.....

im not giving anything up......whether its window cleaning, weight training or playing the drums.....in fact my new roland electric kit is getting delivered on monday so im going back to work tuesday now after a full week off! ;D

the beta blocker im taking is a very low dose(1.25mg per day) but ive only been taking it since tuesday so it will probably take time to get used to it....i dont have angina and i dont feel like crap most of the time so this is probably a little blip....

i certainly dont need a pacemaker(i wouldnt have one either)!neither do you really....an ablation would be better.....a pacemaker DOESNT GET RID OF AF........

If you like a meal like that are you sure you are used to 5* hotels Daz,I wouldn’t eat at the 1 near to me for free m8.

You cant beat the toby carvery near my missus house...really good.....we ve been going there for nearly 8 years now and know some of the staff well.....they certainly know how to cook the best sunday roasts.....👍

Which ones that Daz? The only ones I know near here are to be avoided, especially on a Sunday.

Winwick rd.....been going there for years!strange today though...half the tables than normal, took over 30 mins to get served as you cant help yourself.......it was worth it though....👍😄

I've been in that one Daz
I did a builders clean a few years back agter a refurb ;D

Hi Daz, scary that mate.

I suffer from ectopic beats on a daily basis, I had all the checks done a few years ago and the cardio didn't seem bothered so I try not to be.

Stress, caffeine, and oddly enough a bad night's sleep all contribute. Probably more factors I'm not aware of too.

Hows your weight now? I remember you saying you were roughly my height (6"3) but around 17st. I've just dropped down to 14st from 14 and half.

Weight has a huge impact on our health. Measure your waist, if its more than half your height then that's a bad health indicator.

In a way its nice to see it doesn't bother you too much, but not sure that's a good thing?

Keep well mate.

You are wise Daz taking the week off, you only get one shot at life, so look after yourself. There's more to life than work
