Disappearing carpet cleaners
« on: February 11, 2020, 11:22:49 am »
We used to have some great members on here and when I've looked back at posts a lot of their websites are for sale or nothing there, people like Mark Betts, Phil Marlour, Steve Gunn, Woodman, Dave Washbrook, Ken Wainwright, Paul Moss anyone know what happened to any of them?

Ken Wainwright was the trainer for solutions last time I logged in there, but that was a couple of years ago

I didn't interact with any of the others... Mike may be better for this, or Simon Gerard if he ever pops back in

Some have left the industry Mark Betts became a photographer, Phil Marlow a milkman.

Some don’t post because they get sick of spoon feeding new starters basic information and thought of it as educating their competitors.

I said to the Admin years ago they needed to stop members using alias as it  stop some member posting as they won’t  answer  or help someone they don’t know or where they live.

Also some just can’t make a success of it

I remember it, which one were you? ;D

That was the early days when carpet cleaning was a solitary occupation,  (almost post internet)  and info was gained from suppliers and Prochems trade magazine.

Cleantalk was started by a carpet cleaner and a web designer (sorry forgot their names) then it was bought out by Nick at solutions. This was the first time carpet cleaners were able to talk on a national scale and discuss ideas.

Then Glen organised a day out in Layland, Simon brought long his truckmount and we cleaned some carpets.

Mark Betts did come back into carpet cleaning, woodman I believe ran into financial trouble and moved on, Steve Gunn got fed up and went to work at Toyota, Dave Washbrook does concrete polishing, Paul Moss was banned (quite a few times) Ken has rightly retired from cleaning but does training, I pretty sure Phil Marlor is cleaning carpets.

I didn’t realise Steve  Gunn had packed it in.

It’s a strange situation, I will die crouched over my wand at 90yrs, I could never see myself doing anything else than cleaning of some sort. I think you need it in your blood, I’m sat now in the hotel bar in Tenerife sipping a cocktail, watching the sunset while my wife get ready in the room and what do i do? Go on CIU.

Looks nice Mike, there’s something satisfying about enjoying sunnier climbs whilst the phone rings, booking work to fund your next trip.

2 weeks in fuertaventura at Christmas and back again for 5 days at end of March without the kids love the canaries in winter.

Can’t see me ever giving up the Beauty is when the time comes to slow down you can do a couple of days a week and still generate reasonable funds to enjoy the finer things.

That’s like me, I can’t switch off from work, even when I’m on holiday. Apart from Christmas, that’s the only time I completely switch off.

Stev Gunn is now a security van driver. Dave Washbrook and Paul Moss are still going.

I can understand packing it in within 5yrs of starting but once you get past 10yrs it’s relatively easy going.

keep in good health,  charge realistic prices, do the best job you can and be methodical with your marketing.....do this and you will be ok

Dave Washbrook has a very successful grinding business but was still cleaning the odd carpet up until a few months ago.  I think he has now sold all his carpet stuff to concentrate on the grinding and polishing.
