DI position
« on: March 05, 2019, 09:20:11 pm »
Can anyone help me please. I have my RO4040 set up and am getting 150 after the RO . Do I put the Di vessel straight after the RO or do I put the water in the tank and then run it through the DI after the pump. I am struggling to get my head around this. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Aiden

What is it before RO? Straight out of the tap? Your RO should remove at least 95% of impurities.

Me thinks that your RO is poorly !
Either that or the tap TDS is around 3000 ppm !
What is the tap TDS ?
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

You should be looking at 015 from the RO if good .
Have you used one before , got any pics of the set up ?

I bought it second hand off eBay. Would I have to strip the RO down and rebuild it

Check the ratio of pure/waste is set correctly....you could have it on flush as said above.

Sounds like membrane is knackered though, that's  best part of £200 to cheer you up  ;D

if you got it second hand did you collect it or was it posted ? if posted did the ro membrane have any wrapping around it to keep from drying out

if you've got a link to the eBay sale we might be able to help by seeing what you brought

If the tds meter is reading 255 (roughly?) then its probably reading the output from the r/o correctly.

As per Gomo; what it your pure to waste ratio when producing water? ( A very important question. I saw one person completely shut off the waste water tap which will damage the membrane and give you a high pure tds reading - hence the question.)

A quality Axeon membrane HF5 (water pressure between 50 and 100psi) will cost you £257.00 + VAT from GAPS water.
http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/RO_Ultratech_Membranes.html

There are some cheap membranes around but with very poor performance which, imho, aren't suitable for window cleaning applications.

You should also replace your prefilters which you should do regularily depending on your water useage.

DI vessel.

You can put it either after your r/o or after your pump but before your hose reel on the van.

We have ours after r/o so the water that goes into out storage tank is pure. Doing it this way saves space in the van and allows several vans to fill up with water without each van having to carry a di vessel.

Come to think of it so would the pre filters be gone if you were getting 150 after them.

Yes there is a sediment filter and a carbon filter before the 4040 RO. It looks like I will have to replace the lot just so it's all new

Thanks again for all the help

Hi there again.
So I have managed to do what has been suggested. Did 50/50 and 60/40 ratios but still coming out with the same result about 157 after RO

P&F you got it. Ok I know Spruce put a link to a company for a new RO filter. Any others out there that I maybe have not looked at. Any comments or Spectrum filters. Any advice on how they go into the stainless steel housing. Watched Squeaky clean Dave. That was the white canister you can get. Thanks Aiden

Spectrum sediment filter is ok.
Service life on a Spectrum carbon block is poor for the price - Fiberdyne is a little more expensive but has a much longer service life.

I have no experience with Spectrum 4040 membranes but I would still go for Axeon HF5 even although they are more expensive.

Generally speaking its easy to get swayed on price. There are cheap Chinese knockoffs in the market for 1/2 the price but not suitable for window cleaners.

We need the most efficient membrane that will take the most impurities out of the water. If we use a less efficient one, the additional cost of resin to remove those remaining particles will negate the initial cost of buying a cheap membrane.

So I took the advice and purchased all 3 filters. Axeon HF5 and the other 2 suggested.
My TDS has come down from 155 to 97 before the DI. My tap pressure is 40 psi but the spot where I am getting 97 is at 22psi. Either side of that it creeps up. Going on threads and videos I have watched, this is too low to produce a lower TDS. Any advice will be great.

A booster pump... If your producing the water at home, dont forget when you've got things like washing machines going, showers,  etc this will lower your pressure even more while there on. Ideally you want the pressure around 80psi to have your membrane working at its best a booster pump will do this.
Also what you have your waste to pure ratio set will affect your tds readings. If your mains input is around 260ppm i would personally set it at around 60 -40 pure to waste as a starting point and go from there.
