Expanding
« on: October 14, 2018, 09:01:30 pm »
Hi can anyone point me in the right direction on here of someone who's got more than one van on the go? I'm looking to expand and just want some advise on how they manage staff and maintain a standard in work.
Thanks in advance

I was out for a run with my wife this morning and passed a house I used to do that I lost. A particularly fussy old cow actually. The reality is that staff will never be good enough for someone like that because they won’t go the extra mile and because it may be different staff each time, they will never know the right hoops to jump through.

Staff will do a perfectly adequate job, but they’ll never keep old cows like the one above happy. I said exactly that to my wife.

From my (limited) experience staff womt do as good a job as you do. They just are not interested in the attention to detail.

Tell them again and again but in the end like 8 weekly says they will do an ok job that is acceptable to most but will never please them all.

Defo need some expanding work trousers.

You won’t please all customers, whether it’s you or staff cleaning - that’s just the way it is

Initially as you pass the work to staff there can be customers who resist the change and even try to demand that they don’t want ‘staff’ cleaning only you but the longer you employ and take on new customers that gets less and less now I don’t even get a second mention that I don’t clean the windows anymore - it’s accepted ( even the ‘posh’ lady of the manor - who insisted only I could do the clean - is happy with the lads now cleaning inside and out )

I beg to differ about quality the lads take great pride in their work - yes occasionally at the end of the day they go home rather than just sort out that split hose or replace a broken jet but hey we all have had that !
We get maybe 1 complaint a month ( missed window or whatever ) half of those turn out to be customer errors anyway - not a bad % considering we do 1200 cleans a month

Sometimes the customers try it on. It's not quite the same but when I've sold some work onto friends, some customers will say that the price included this and that when it never has.

On another note, I used to help out a mate one day a week on his work. Did so for years. But he had different work ethics to mine and not as particular and so I would do an adequate job the same as he would so we could get the work done. Admittedly we never got any complaints and never lost any work either as the windows were cleaned (trad tools) and the customers were happy. But on my work, I would not have been overly happy. I'm not OCD but I would have kept the frames cleaned on a regular basis did that little bit extra.
So staff might do a great job and not all the customers will be happy (for whatever reasons) and you as a boss might not be happy as its not your standard. But as far as cleaned windows go,,,,, I'm sure they will be clean!

Don’t do it!!! Bloody stressful!!! The more you push the staff to do the right thing the more they rebel! I spend more time running around after mine then I do running the business the way I want too.

You try and make their life easier and they then make it harder! Can’t win either way
