All wood has three main constituents, cellulose represents approximately half its mass. The cellulose is organised as short sharp needles woven in long strands. The needles incorporate a binder which forms a sophisticated composite of excellent mechanical properties. Lignin, a hard polymer resin accounts for around a quarter of the wood mass, the remaining a mix of hemicellulose, minerals and polymers to provide natural defences, (colour, smell etc). Hypo will knacker the Lignin

Depending what mix you use on it and what other chemicals you use on it it will be fine knowledge is power

Many wood treatment facilities use hypo to change the colour of timber depending on strength and other additives without any detrimental effects , it can also be used to clean timber but you do need to know what you are doing or you can damage it or dry it out with hypo , there is plenty of information out there about how to do it safely
