wood furniture marks on carpet...solutions pls
« on: February 20, 2018, 06:25:00 pm »
Rookie mistake !!! ::)roll  didn't put  foil pads under chair legs !!!     I thought my LM had left the carpet dry. (beige 80/20 mix). no studs on the chair feet so its not rust, but  its left a brown/orange stain where 3 legs  (from 3 different chairs, one from each) have made contact.   6 chairs one table, 28 legs! only 3 have left a mark.  Help please !  ( Custy is taking it very well, at the moment!).
Cheers

Opps sorry to hear that  Im sure you wont do that again.... I would try solvent and toweling and then extract with strong ph cleaner, it may require HyPx when dry or combo reducer such as Dye Gone from Chemspec or similer. All the best... Simon

I did this as a rookie 34 years ago and never did it again! I managed to get away with it using dry cleaning fluid and a towel.
Good luck.

In the first instance try 'Eco-Pog' from  World Of Clean (Solutions); http://www.worldofclean.co.uk/chemicals/spot-stain-gum-removers/eco-pog-spotter-500ml.html   There may be other 'similar type' spotters on the market that you are more familiar with.
In the second instance, you can try Stain2Go, also from WOC. Stain2Go is a reducing agent which can be used on a broad spectrum of stains, and is a safer and milder alternative to the highly successful Solution 'Magic' Stain And Dye Remover. If that fails,  'step it up to trying  'Magic' which might include using an iron for steam

1 Mix acid at 8:1 mix spray on and leave to dwell for 10 mins.

2 Rinse with fresh cold water.

If improvement was made repeat.

3 If there is still a stain spray with  Craftex Shift, leave to dwell for 10 - 15 mins

4 Rinse with fresh cold water

If there is no improvement, dry the area before considering repeating.

This should work depending severity of the stain and the type of carpet. If it doesn't  it may be all you can do. There are other ways of using Craftex Shift (Sodium Metabisilphite) which will improve its effectiveness however there is a risk of removing color from the carpet.

Have Fun

Thanks to you all. I've gone for , Restore solve-it  and their "specialist stain remover"  and as a last resort , their Hy peroxide.   Gulp!!   Thanks again guys, and any advice is always welcome.

Tried the Restore products. Unfortunately they had no impact whatsoever. Offered customer a full refund. Waiting.

A refund on the cleaning?

If you did the damage you’ll find that you’ll have to replace the carpet.

Sorry to hear you have not had the best results. Did you try my method?

Restore Solv it is a solvent cleaner and the stain you are trying to remove is likely a tannin stain from the tannins in the wood. You will have better luck treating it like a tea or coffee stain. Using a solvent first may have actually hindered your progress as it is blocking the water based products from reaching the stain.

You can have Tannin stains or it can be Varnish or Woodstain depending on the article. I did advise you that some of these are impossible to remove. Did you try the stains individually. If the Solv-iT didn't work you should have used the Specialist Stain Remover to try on one of the others. I have had success using this on Tanning stains as it is an Acidic Oxidiser and seemed to cause less bleaching than reducing agents.

Yeah, did everything you suggested. Nothing!  Used different methods on different stains. Nothing!

I have some similar spare carpet to experiment on. Called client, still waiting.

Really tough... I would try Dye Gone by Chemspec as last resort and if customer is willing to give you another go.. Ive had some great success on really tricky dyes and  deep stains as a do or die... Best Simon

First of all, I'm sorry to harp on about this situation.
Second, thanks for all the support and advice.
Third, an UNBELIEVABLE turnout to this. The house owner has turned down my offers on the basis that  "Im in business myself and I know these things happen. Im not the type of person to start claiming or suing. "  Im going to try to get the marks out again, and , agreed to clean some other areas for them without charge.
Bacofoil, cling film, poly blocks and sticky tabs already packed !!!!
Once again thank you.

what you gonna try now ?
One option might be to call that Dave L chap and ask him to do the removal ... but teach u how to do , pay him well , it would be lesson woth paying for as youl come across these type of marks again and again .

Some brown/orange marks react well and quick with an acid ..or a reducer ...or an oxidiser ...but i have a feeling your furniture marks will be a hard to lighten as they come .

If it was me ....  i would mix up a very  strong oxidiser ...and a very  strong reducer ...  and try both to see if one is reacting more that the other
For the reducer ... i perfer the powder sources of sod met ( something like craftex shift ) ... because u can mix it super concentrate ...where as i wouldnt trust the liquid product versions , they might be ready to applt to a tea stain ...  but u might need s small super strong mix to get any colour change on the furniture mark  .
For an oxidiser ... i like hair bleach ..i get it in bulk , but nip down to boots and this kit should all u need to try it out ..
http://www.boots.com/bleach-total-bleach-kit-10239300
or u could buy dye gone
If you mix up a sample of both the above i would dab each onto an area of one of the spots with a tiny paint brush or cotton bud ...
mix the sod met in very hot water first , apply external  heat then if u like with an iron and towel or a steamer ...or a hair dryer , i perfer the hair dryer .  Heat should also accelerate the oxydiser .
Even at that it might take time and several applications of whatevers working to get a dramatic colour change ( or it might not , wont know til u try )
It might even be a case of apply the oxdiser and leaving it overnight if thats an option to really get to whiteish colour ...
which brings u to your next issue .... unless your very lucky the new colour wont blend in at all with the carpet colour ... might be a very bright white stain .
in that case ... i mix some black wool dye really dilute ( almost transparent ) in a spray bottle , get a sheet of a4 , make a hole the size of the stain and put it over it .... them mist the dye over the stain ,  extract it ... then repeat up til the white mark ends up a light grey colour and blends more with the surrounding carpet  .... chances are when viewed standing up u wont really notice the mark .
