Why bother?
Wait for it to go and then get new pump from woodbridge commercial for about £130
I dont see the point in paying a couple hundred pounds trying to preserve things that are only worth a couple hundred pounds to start with???

The price of servicing a machine with usually, only 3 main components, each only worth a few hundred pounds each maximum.
Is about the same price you would get charged to get a £10.000 car serviced

You wouldnt pay £10.000 to service your car would you

£200 to service a machine, imo total rip of

Red, What are these three components, and is it worth looking into wether a c/c machine is easily self servicable before buying one or are they all pretty much simple diy jobs. Do some machines require a more expensive component than others or are they usually compatible?

Most portables are 2vac motors and a pump, the standard is 2 X 3stage vac, standard pumps used to be about 100psi to 135psi nowadays quite a lot are a bit bigger.

Thats about all thats in them thats servicable, then theres the electrics, plumbing and body none of wich need touching untill they wear or brake.

I have replaced both vac motors and pump in my machine, not down to my own use but as i brought used machine with a lot of hours on it, it had allready been put through its paces.

To replace vacs cost £130 each fitted, about £100 if you fit yourself.

Pump £181 fitted, about £140 if you fit yourself.

These prices include vat, if your vat registered its even cheaper.

Price quoted to get machine serviced around £200 ??? ???

i wouldnt buy a new pump, change the brushes first, try that. ;D

and sometimes vac motors are repairable when they go, and the techicions can test them and find the problem.

not sure binning things soon as theres a problem is the cheapest option.

Hi,

Where is the best place to source parts? I would be happy to service our machines, but struggle to find the bits.

Cheers

My machine is from Alltec.

It was serviced 3 months ago. Brushes changed on the vacs, new waste outlet, inlet covers on the vacs in the waste tanks replaced. All in it was £70.

Yes I could do it myself but I'm new to the business and certainly no mechanic,  wouldn't know exactly what I was doing, so I figured the cost was reasonable, I'm sure others would disagree.

Speak to local suppliers, ask what they think and go from there.

Nigel, it was Altec that quoted me £200 to service my machine ???

Craig, im sure woodbridge could have repaired my vacs or pump, trouble is time you pay them to take the pump or vac out and then take it apart diagnose the fault repair it pay for any parts needed and then rebuild it.

(labour is dear parts are cheap)

Its just as cheap to get a new one.

And what would be better a pump or vac thats done a 1000 hours and then been repaired, or a nice new one that will hopefully give me another 1000 hours of unintrupted service

I guess the main part of any service would be changing the brushes of the vac motors and pump.  Is there anywhere that sells these bits for prochem/alltech/ashbys

Ill take a look at woodbridge  ;)

Graeme,

pump brushes; woodbridge are cheap, but cant say for sure they do them, or i know for sure extracta will do them, also with instructions of fitting (its not hard)

or cheaper still is go direct to there suppliers 'williamson pumps' 0845 2263638 i belive they do all the low psi (centrifugal?) pumps for all machines ie. shurflo, flojet, 70, 135 psi. and also do brushes and other repair kits. they are helpful chaps too and will talk you through fitting.

vac brushes; woodbridge.01279 422220

Red,  i see your point, im just saying there is a place for servicing and some people will prefer to have someone do the work for them, bit like with cars when i was younger i used to do my own servicing, but most of it is a pig of a job, these days i happely let my macanhic do it. ;D

On a different note, I am in the process of organising an NCCA event for later this summer, and in the West Midlands close to the Motorway network.  A colleague, who is also a service engineer for various manufacturers, has suggested that he could come along and give a short seminar on serviceing your own machine, along with a practical demo.

Watch this space.

Safe and happy cleaning :)
