A royal stich up!
« on: November 23, 2015, 09:07:49 pm »
Had an email last week from a company who installs soffits/fascias/guttering. Asked if I would drive 25 miles and clean some guttering, inside and out.

Quoted really cheap as I'm just starting out and need the work. The company ask us if we'd also fit a stink pipe while we're up there, so I chuck an extra £20 on the bill as its supposedly easy access and the parts are on site.

Cheeky buggers lied, we had to lay a ladder across a conny roof, over a porch from a flat roof. Turns out the guttering was brand new and didn't need cleaning, just a bit of debris to sweep out of the conny guttering.

How would I go around asking for more cash of this company? Is it to late as we've done the work?

I would as a matter of principle honour my quote and learn in future not to quote without seeing the job first. Anyone who insists on getting a quote over the phone should ring alarm bells as the job is more likely to be bigger or more hassle than they are going to let on to you.

Don't let this experience discourage you though. Most of us have been caught out at some time.

It was a right mess! Luckily the old dear who owned the house was a sweet heart.

Cheeky £50 cash for her Windows and quick clean of her conny roof.

A quote by its nature is the agreed price, an estimate on the other hand can be subject to change, if you went ahead and did the work you have accepted that the price agreed is ok, before starting you could have rung them explaining that the price now needs to be £££ as the work is not as described.

Still you live and learn...

Nope, not unless you'd secured at what you know is going to be a cracking rate.

Why didn't you call them when you were at the job and it was proving awkward?

So going by what you have said you are getting paid at some point 70 by the firm that instructed you to do the said works. Then you got another 50 to clean the windows & conny roof from the old dear...Is that right?

Some people want a rough quote over the phone for this reason if you were to say £50 and it's a £200 job it looks dodgy if you were to ask for the latter later on. As said you live and learn and I never ever quite over the phone anymore unless I do a house and the neighbour of it rings me so I know what I'm quoting on over the phone.
