Walter a good run out has to be varied 10 mile drive down the motorway will get the exhaust hot but it also needs a bit of thrashing as Damo put it , On country roads to get the revs up and generate more heat to give it a good blast out .
Unfortunately for you lads having a van its more of a pain i use my truck at weekends as well so it will get more varied use .

I might seriously look down the 4x4 route next time,I can almost get away without a ladder 99 per cent of the time now days and what with the short poles these days with a cab on the rear it should be doable. What sort of tanks are people getting in these

Not only that but to get the DPF hot enough to burn off the soot, the ECU actually injects extra fuel into the system to raise the temperature to the required level. So, to add insult to injury, while ever a DPF is regenerating your doing about 15MPG!! If you don't complete a full regen cycle then you will just keep going round in circles until you do- all at a drastically reduced MPG.
