Gardiners Brush similar to Vikan ??
« on: April 28, 2015, 05:51:27 pm »
We've been using the vikan brushes for the last 4-5yrs, as everyone knows they are like having half a house brick on the end of your pole and reeling in a Marlin....lol. We like the scrubbing power of the vikan. Its used on builders cleans to clean fascias/soffits/windows/sills the lot......and domestic.......and it stands up to all of this very well. We use 22ft and 27ft clx poles, and would like something that is a lot lighter ( as get bloody neck/shoulder pain) but has the same scrubbing power and durability of the vikan, but in the gardiners range. We've had a few gardiners brushes in the past, and they just didn't seem up to the job, with very little bristles and flayed/flair bristles after very little use. Any of you guys transferred to a gardiners brush after a vikan and been happy with the strength and durability of it.................and if so, which one. Just about to order some bits, so would like your input. Thanks  :) :)
If Carlsberg made window cleaners....I'd be one of them....lol

Gardiners do a flocked single trim sill brush which is OK. One of their heavier brushes but a lot lighter than a Vikan sill.

I would say that you will need the superlite stiff , when i changed from vikan to gardiner i went to the superlite medium mixed , great brush but i found it went out of shape too fast for my liking , hence the swap to the stiff version , these last very well indeed , having said that , they can be harsh on lead and small pane windows , they can also leave bristle marks on the glass if first clean or builder clean .
I now use extreme stiff only , as i only do repeat monthly .

My advice would be to get superlite in stiff and medium mixed , chop and change them according to the work in hand , this will give you the insight into bristle types while also halfing the weight on the end of the pole

I cant as yet comment on hybrid or supreme stuff as have not yet used them , but i will soon im sure

Dazmond or Number 23 will be along shortly , now these pair have serious fetishes with the weapon of choice , you my friend have only yourself to blame    ;D ;D ;D

If your looking for long lasting brushes then gardiners are not for you.
Even the new supreme range I'm starting to find are losing there shape in a matter of weeks. Not sure if that's just me being heavy handed but iv had other brushes hold there shape very well for months ( tecbuk, pro window, vikan, even unger)

Even though I destroy gardiners brushes very quickly I'm always drawn back to using them though just because they feel so damn good on the glass for such a light brush.

Out of the gardiners range the closest I think you'll get to a vikan is the flocked sill brush. Iv got this on my second pole, it's been used to clean conservatorys, fascias, gutters, cladding, even a couple of rendered walls and it's still in pretty good condition.

I have been using a black and white xtreme brush for over a year now and its nearly as good as it was new (showing a little splay but nothing to get concerned about ).
I would say my favourite brush would be the xtreme soft but it doesn't last, the xtreme stiff in my opinion isn't great on everyday glass work unless your using it with hot. Great for green conny roofs.
Because the xtreme brushes are so light its hard at times to trust that they are up to the job so some end up over cleaning or applying to much pressure as a result.
If you can get past this you will never use another type of brush again.

I use hot and cold , i dont use hot because it cleans better , i use it to make my life more pleasant in the winter months thats it .
I wont blow money on gas in the normal times as i see no benefit at all in cleaning power , its just a look at me tool for the rich window cleaners  ;D

Stiff superlite and medium mixed superlite or stiff extreme and medium mixed extreme seals the deal for Mr run of the mill ,

All i will say is that stiff performs the same as medium mixed when used with hot , job done  ;)

This would depend on which Vikan brush you have been using up to now.

Vikan Flocked (classic red/green oval brush) - Super-Lite Standard Flocked or Sill Flocked
Vikan Mono-Filament (red rectangular brush) - Super-Lite DT Stiff or Medium-Mixed (slightly softer than the Vikan)
Vikan Flocked Sill Brush (red/Green) - Sill Flocked
Vikan Mono-Filament Sill (red) - Sill Stiff or Sill Medium (slightly softer than the Vikan)

If you want an even lighter brush than the above options then the new Supreme brushes are lighter and faster on most windows.

You must not go near the edge of window frames . To get an Xtreme  to last more than a few months .

The edges get knocked against window reveals and causes lost bristles , Same with supremes I am also findindg at the moment .

I clean every part of the frame except along the top and haven't lost a bristle this way yet, have lost the odd bristle that has got caught in the beading that holds the glass in the frame ( I know theres a name for these but cant think of it ) but nothing compared to brushes Iv used in the past.
Even the extreme soft didn't lose any bristles it just curled up at the edges very quickly.
Just in case I get called a cowboy I do clean along the tops of the frames but I don't use a brush.

If you have ever used Extreme versions any other brush will seem way heavier compared, just because the pole you might be using is light the brush makes all the difference IMO
