Is it worth it I thought
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:23:16 pm »
Hey, What's Happening,

Today I drove to Wandsworth from Chessington about 20 miles round journey to clean a small terrace inside & out with sky lights. I do it 2 a year. The job took 1 & 3/4 hours but by the time I got back home I felt that the £40.00 that she paid by bank transfer was way to cheap what with the time, expense & tax to pay.

She had a guy around just recently to put same non intrusive film on the inside of a bay window which took him under 2 hours for.....wait for it...... £260.00!!!!!!!!!!

What with me having paid the mortgage off & kids left home I should be charging more as I am not desperate for the work.

What do you lot reckon? someone please!

I think we have all at some time had jobs like that and we end up begrudgingly doing them .
Problem is knowing what a justifiable amount to put the job up by ?
How long have you been cleaning for this customer ?
I think you could justify a £10 rise if you want to keep and can give good reason, if like you say you are not so bothered go for more.

so it took 105 mins to do and say 45 mins driving(there and back) so 2 hours 30 mins for 40 quid?plus fuel expenses.thats really not worth it mate(for me).id have to double it to £80 to make it just about worthwhile.even then i probably wouldnt take it on at twice a year.

i have to at least earn £30-£35 an hour as an average rate over the course of a day with very minimal driving time on outside maintenance window cleaning or i wont take the job on.
price higher/work harder!

Why is a small terraced house taking you nearly 2 hours?

Ground, first & loft conversion. Have to park, go to meter which she pays for. wipe down window sills, take blanket in to cover bed below velux. Take back net curtains. Take in small step ;ladder & do a first class job.

Hey Kev !!! Have you thought of fitting non intrusive film instead of window cleaning? It pays much more.

Far too cheap IMO - but I guess we've all done it; I know I have.  Even if it was in the same street as you it would still be £22.85 an hour.  It sounds like one of those very fiddly jobs and it is too easy to underestimate how long the fiddly stuff takes.

We all have done such jobs ! But like you have just done is that we stop & ask hey how much am I actually making out of this ?? & when we do the calculation ...I mean not just the £40 but fuel tax time also when you get back setting up again on another job (bet it takes another 20min after 20mile trip) & you you come to the point of this really is a joke ! Time is money when we are working that's why we leave our families to go out & get the bread !! But sometimes we are lost in over pleasing the customers

Are there no other jobs on the way / way back ?
My furthest regular job is probably nearly 10 miles from me but I would not even have considered it, had there not been anything else I could be cleaning on route.
I have one stand alone job a few times a year when she calls me, a house and conny clean that I'll do on a Saturday morning, probably a 40 min round trip and 2.5 hr job, my best customer because she insisted on paying me an extra hours pay for the travel time  :)
