Hi guys.

If i put a trigger on the end of my transfer hose for filling my tank, what happens to the pump when the trigger is closed ? does the pump keep running and if so will this damage the pump ? thanks

Yes, unless it's fitted with a pressure switch.

Water will be churned up inside the pump creating friction and will eventually get to boiling point, by then you will have most likely blown off the trigger or hose due to the pressure build up.

I have the same problem! Every morning i end up with wet hands or feet trying to quickly run to turn the pump of whilst throwing the hose onto the floor

i use a valve on mine , when switched off the pump still runs but causes no problems for the 5 mins it runs with the valve closed , its a sub pump so may be different with a centrifugal pump .

In my case nothing.  And I've left it running overnight by accident.  No explosions, no reactor core meltdowns, nothing at all bar a bit of wasted electricity.

I bought a 240v plug in adaptor with remote control switch from maplins 4 £15, Turn off and on from 20 meters. Job done!
