Is it worth upgrading my Merlin for a 4040 RO?
« on: July 09, 2014, 07:49:10 am »
Hi, my tap tds is around 300 ppm its about 50ppm after its been through the Merlin. My Merlin can fill 5, 25kg bottles in about an hour with a booster pump.

Thinking about upgrading to a 4040RO maybe even a twin RO, worth the upgrade? Is it much faster at filling than a Merlin? Also I'm guessing that the tds will be a lot lower that 50ppm? Hope so anyway.

Thanks

I had similar results with a merlin although did not use a booster pump, tds from tap about 275 ppm. Changed to a 4040 and produced 200 liter per hour with a tds of 12 ppm.
Does 125 liters per day warrant the expense of upgrading though ? If you are likely to take on more work and use more water, I'd say go for it.

I'm not going to do the maths for you but changing from merlin to 4040 will reduce your resin usage and reduce your water bill (if metered).  To be conservative, allow for an average of TDS 010 for the 4040.  Assume 1:1.5 pure:waste ratio. for 4040 and compare both to what you currently have.  Then allow for the 4040 membrane costing you a lot more that the merlin one (you can also factor in the higher housing cost but that's a 1 off.  Then you can work out how long it will take to recover your higher outlay.  If you switch, it may be possible to get a bit of money for the merlin - but very little IMO.

Thx for replys. I use a lot more than 5 bottles a day  ;D thats just a good measure of what it fills in an hour. Picking up a lot more work so i think a 4040RO sounds the way to go it would have paid for its self after the 1st year i reckon. Thanks.

I used a Merlin for over 2 years, and even now with using approx 1500 ltrs per day the Merlin would cope.

I up graded to an RO 4040 which produces around 200 ltrs per hour but at 9 TDS
Where the Merlin was just over 100 per hour but at 22 TDS

Resting costs are a lot lower and less waste water which when on a meter also has a bearing on overall running costs.

The Merlin is quite an under rated piece of kit, when used with a decent booster pump.

I'm surprised you can only get the TDS down to 50 I'd expect better than that
