very few ppl I know that have used adwords on a small scale recommend it - although there are a few exceptions.

My recommendation would be to get a pro to setup your campaign (try peopleperhour.com to find someone) as they'll know how to maximise the exposure you get for your budget and should save you money in the long run.

I used to spend about £40 per months on adwords with good results

I get ok results but the biggest problem is that most people seem to want one offs from Adwords. I only spend around £25 per month. I would say it is worthwhile though.  Be very careful when you set it up though. Make sure you set it up for exact keyword phrases. Don't use Express & don't listen to their suggested keywords.

I use Google Adwords and it's ok. It pays for itself every month, especially when the sun is shining  ;D
You do get some crap off it but you get a few good ones too.
Set it up yourself if you have the time and keep it very simple.
I also set it up for a WFP mate of mine in the next town and he got a lovely commercial job the next day.
Poo  :(

50/50 between 1 offs and regulars. But if you charge a 1 off price then its still money coming in

Only if you have time. Often they want it within a day or two.

Its all about the keywords. I know that sounds stupid and obvious.

I went round to my mates house and he was competing for top spot for just "window cleaning" £25 a day some days!

There is some guides about, its dead simple and you can get away with £10 - £20 a month and get some cracking jobs.

Easy peasy, i just tell them a special offer is starting next week (or 2/3 weeks later if we are stacked)

That "Desperate" job can soon wait ;)

No, because it is often end of tenancy or a party or something.

You don't have "window cleaner yourtown" as keywords then?

Aren't you targeting window cleaning? I assume you must be targeting gutters or driveways or roofs then because unless the person searching for a window cleaner in his town has some special need, he is very likely to search "window cleaner yourtown".

I use Adwords for various things at various times of the year and I think it's fantastic. It's a decent substitute if your website is not on page one for the keyword you want. Can be a rip off if you use the default settings. My biggest single piece of advice to save you a huge amount of money is to set your search results to 'exact match'. Then someone will have to type in 'window cleaner Telford' to find your ad. On 'broad match', if someone types in just 'Telford', your ad may still show, they may still click even though they have no intention of looking for a window cleaner and then you still pay for your click.

As a real life example, I type in solar-related search terms to help tweak underperformance pages. If I type in 'solar panel cleaning Telford' one company (who is on the forum) always comes up that is miles away and I know they don't cover Telford at all in their ad or on their website. My guess is that their search term is on a national basis when it needs to be local and is on a broad match so that as soon as somebody types 'solar panel cleaning......' their ad shows. Their Adwords campaign must be costing a small fortune if it is set up this way. People all over the UK may be clicking and costing him money even though he never services their area. What a waste!

Set up properly though, Adwords can make you a lot of extra money.
