You can be ok on a weigh bridge but still get nicked for overloading your rear axle.

Just because you have a xxx payload dont mean all the weight can be on the rear axle.

Usually more danger of overloading the front axle as vans are designed to have the weight centrally located in the back, not tight up against the bulkhead. I assume this because my van was weighed and just within the limit. The tank is set back well from the bulkhead but the front axle was very close to its limit.

Very unusual to get a sensible copper. His first words were, "that's overloaded what you got in there?".

After showing him and him knowing how to work out the volume of water and knowing that water weighs approx 1 kg - 1 litre, he then changed his mind and sent us on our way. The van was a 55 plate fiesta van with a 250 tank in and 3 x 25 litre containers.

Even tho the arse is on the ground, legally it can carry a lot more weight.
