Booster pump, do I need one?
« on: May 14, 2014, 03:47:42 pm »
Sorry new to all this.

I have a 450gpd I'm currently trying to set up in the garage, at the moment I'm missing bits like an in-line TDS meter and pressure gauge etc so not quite there.  I'm not sure if I need a pump or not?  The hose will go from the back garden, over a fence and around the front and into the garage.

What is the purpose of the pump, is it just to speed up production or is it because the the 450 won't work with a low pressure?

I saw this mentioned :

R.O's need a decent pressure to work at optimum
It'll increase production and lower your tds

The anount of hose you suggest between tap to r.o i would have thought you'll need one, but get a pressure gauge first. Anything under 40psi (which is likely) get a booster pump

Thanks Don.

The description on that pump I linked says "Simply install the pump inline between your prefilters and RO membranes".

Forgive me, but do I just buy some extra 1/4inch hose and fit it there?  Or is there more to it...

You wont need any more hose mate

Cut the hose inbetween pre filters and membranes, put one side in the inlet and the other on the outlet (there should be arrows on the pump to show water direction so you'll know which is which)

And you then just run an extension lead from the house to the van?  No good if it's raining.  Or is it something else to hook to and drain the van battery!

I'd rather have something within the house that will increase my hot water flow for example (and the cold) and push the water out to the van quicker, rather than pull it from the outdoor tap.

Iv got the pure water 350 gpd system and brought a new 500l tank and found in the mornings it wasn't full, (my water pressure is shocking)
Fitted this between the pre and r/o filters and it's working like a charm it's at least halved my fill up time and lowered my tds iv got pics of it fitted if you want me to send them too you.

I have an RO unit that I bought many years ago that has TWO of those same booster pumps on.

This is mine:

http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/FLEXEON-300-reverse-osmosis-system-2707.html

I'd never used it until a couple of weeks ago, since just after I bought it a mate of mine gave me a 4040 RO unit he had spare.

I fired it up for the first time (had to order a new power supply) and I have to say, for such a small unit it was very good.  Produced exactly 1 litre per minute, so easily more than 1,000 litres a day no matter what the inlet pressure is.  It even automatically flushes the membrane for 1 minute before starting, and every half hour while in use.

The twin pumps keep the membrane pressure at exactly 120psi.

Those pumps are great, the reason my unit needs 2 of them is because 1 pump can only produce a certain amount of flow, and not enough to feed the membrane.  2 pumps work a treat.

Just thought I'd update this, got all the bits (I think) that I need and have laid them all out.

Despite Tom kindly taking photos for me I'm still confused, I think Tom's RO is different to mine - so is hosed up slightly differently.

I'm trying to fit an in-line TDS meter, a pressure gauge, a pump to the RO.

There is about 3 different connections on this thing, I also need it to go out to my existing DI which has a hoselock connection (I have an adapter).

I've got no idea what's in and out and what goes where - Yes, I am ******* useless :)

Still trying to figure all this out if anyone can help.

I do have instructions for the pump but the instructions are for a Pure Freedom RO whereas mine is from elsewhere.  The other bits I haven't got a clue how to fit, does the water go into the RO first or the pump first?

Okay in the end I tried to wire it up myself last night, unfortunately it was wrong somewhere - so I stripped it all back and now back to square one.

Is there a diagram somewhere that includes (Pump, water pressure meter, in-line TDS) with this particular RO?

I've not managed to find it on youtube or anything yet...

Water pressure metre wants to go after the pump, so find the hose that goes from the prefilters (blue cannister) to the membranes (white housings) (by the looks of your pics its the blue hose on the right of pic 1)
Your pump and pressure gauge want to go on this hose

Your inline tds metre ; you want the first t piece before the r.o and the sevond t pieces on your pure hose (the blue hose that all 3 membranes are joined with, on the left of pic  1)
