I think you disturbed the rascal. I would phone the custy and tell them to head home as the thief might just come to to finish the job off.

I'd call the custie immediately AND call the police, regardless of what the custie said. You've a reputation to protect and you must do so at all costs, even if it means pi$$ing of and losing a custie.

I had similar ten years back except they had got in by smashing the glass and gone by the time I got there. I went round the neighbours and asked them to call the police. (no mobile on me)

I left the neighbour a card and told him I was working opposite if the law needed to speak to me.

About fifteen minutes later plod arrives and one saunters over to me and I just explained I hadn't looked inside and that was that.

Custy later sent me £10 on top of the bill for phoning the law as soon as i found it.

Happened to me, I left a note for the customer after checking no one was around, turned out it had happened the day before , the customer thanked me for checking no one was about.
I know one say I'll catch someone breaking in

The outcome was .......... I checked with next door to see if they knew anything about it (they didn't but got quite worried) then tried 101 on my mobile - which got me through to Tesco mobile top up (for fecks sake). Eventually phoned home and got my Mrs to call the police and tell them to ring me which they did.

Basically they couldn't give a toss, weren't particularly interested but if the house owner called them and not me then they would respond.

Shoved a letter through the door (and my bill) and went on to the next job. Heard nothing since

Turns out the owners are on holiday but their son is still at home. He came round today to thank me - he thinks I may have disturbed the intruder. Apparently he lobbed a brick through another property's window down the road before robbing it.
