The silent mass of lurkers on the forum.
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:38:56 am »
I have observed so many threads on this forum there ie a very large that never say a word on the forum.Just look at the detail on the right of the thread and see the numbers the higher the readers and the lessor ones who take the trouble to participate in writing. Do these 200 to 300 people feel they have nothing to say or share with this forum.Maybe they are the silent majority like our some od politicians can only have the answer of "NO COMMENT"
Is my observation have any truth or  figment of my imagination.e.g 31respondents and over 400 lurkers  and 4 verses 188 with not a responce.
What do you think , it would be  interesting to hear from the silent lurkers why they have nothing to say. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think 'silent lurkers' is a little unfair!. I have only been using this forum for a short time, but here are few points which could explain what you are noticing.

1, The times were I have contributed to a thread, my comments seem go largely ignored. To those with a skin not quite as thick as mine, this apparent clique-ness might be a little off-putting, and doesn't exactly encourage people to take part.

2, I have often looked at a thread title, clicked on it, but found it wasn't about what I thought it was.

3, If a thread has a lot of posts, it is going to take some time to sift through these and decide whether or not you have anything to contribute to the discussion.

4, Finally(!), and this is especially so if taking into account the previous comment, taking part in a discussion can take up a lot of time, an hour can be sucked out of your day just like that!. Those who have a lot of other demands on their time, just find it easier to have a look at what is being said, whether or not there are useful hints or comments being made to make their lives easier. They may simply not be able to take part, even if they might like to.

This does not, in my opinion, make 'silent lurkers' the undesirable element you seem to be implying. We are all different, and not necessarily looking for the same out of a forum as you!.

lol, I love reading some of the stuff on here sometimes.

Smithie, the read count on the right is how many different reads there have been since the thread has started.

So every time there's a new post on that thread, and anyone reads it, the post count goes up. Not how any different members have read it, just total reads since it started.

Here's an example.

On the chat section here, there's a thread that's titled "jogging". 2200 posts, and over 11200 reads. That's not 11200 different readers!! That's how many reads the thread has had since it started, be it by people who've posted in it, or just a few members who use that section of the forum.

If you click on the control panel, you can scroll down and see who is online at the moment, usually about 200 people, and just below that, who was online in the last 24 hours, usually about 400 to 500 people.
The total number of members on CIU is about 27,000, so about 1 to 2% are online at any one time.

Now that's only the same bunch of a few hundred people on CIU who actually use the forum, and at least half of them are carpet cleaners!!!! It was started by the owners who are CARPET cleaners!!

It really does make me laugh when I read about how all the windies on here are on their forum.  ;D It's originally a carpet cleaners forum.

Lurkers, as you call them, are people who read comments and threads on here now and again, but don't post. Where's the harm in that?
No still don't understand, I must be thick

If someone just reads the postings and doesn't want to comment, that's up to them.

Having written that, and on the off topic section of the forum, sometimes some threads get read by a lot of members and they don't post anything - which is obviously their choice. Considering it's mainly rubbish and waffle that gets posted, and anyone can post almost what ever they want, I'm surprised there isn't more posted.

Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.

Dear Mr Cosy. I think you have mistaken me for someone else. I have a fair understand how forums work as we do have  a forum in darkest Africa. I did own a computer there we did not always have power to run it but..... that's Africa. When the elephant was to lazy to run around and charge the computer batteries. This why I think I know so much about batteries.
I also know  at my age most would feel I am not in tune with 2013 mad cons a and understand what a lurker is.It would be nice to hear from some of these voiceless members of this forum.
Some times all were heard  from the banter fobes and we need so level headed input. I believe many of the silent ones have a place in this forum but feel the brunt of the  banter fobedics.
I am sorry to all the so called "lukers " but some times you need a crowbar to lever or extract you out of the dark.
Thankyou to the few that have be reborn contributors or ex lurkers who have come out of the dark and responded.

I read most of what you've said there. Sorry, you seem to have misunderstood that I was trying to help you. I think it's better for us both if I paste your ID into my mong/ignore list, so we won't be able to read eachothers posts. That's a good feature on this forum, it allows us to blend out members who we don't want to hear from.
So enjoy your time on here. I don't expect we'll miss eachother .
