Anyone out there using the Ionics thermopure system ? Whats it like for reliability, running costs. usability. usefulness. Any major issues with them second hand?

Had mine about 3 years now. The hot system has been great, you do need a good size battery to use consistently.

The one thing I would have liked is thermostat control, but other than that I've been pleased.

Used all day it will cost a couple of quid diesel, no great shakes really.

As a whole system i'd give it 8 out of 10. Anything you want to ask feel free.

When you want to use the hot water it's just a case of turning on the diesel heater switch, this fires up the system and within a couple of minutes you

have hot water.

To make sure of staying hot all day, like with gas, make sure you have adequate diesel in the tank and as said before good battery level.

There are two ways to go with diesel tank, either using your own vehicle tank as I do, or separate tank which runs just the thermopure system.

If using your vehicle diesel and the level falls below about a quarter tank, the thermopure system will cut out to allow you to still be able to drive

home and not run out!

There are two settings for hot water, they call them summer and winter, ranging from 50c to 70c approx.

I phoned Ionics to ask about this last year as my system was approaching 3 years old, and they said there was no maintenance

as such. I take that as just to carry on using until the day it don't work or starts playing up! Then get a webasto ( heater make ) chap to look at and repair.

I would have thought a yacht place or similar could probably do a service if you enquired.

Thanks for the info.

Have you ever cracked any windows with it during the winter months? That's what really concerns me! I have a lot of old houses with 2mm glass. What's the lowest temp you can get it to in the winter?

No windows cracked as of yet, but i dont clean hot when its too cold.

I think thats when you get trouble, that big contrast in temperature, especially with a keen windchill.

Also if like you said you have thin glass on your round, best not take the risk.

The other option for you is the thermostat fitted in your tank, that way you could warm the water to just a tepid temperature.
