Insurance no claims discount
« on: April 25, 2013, 12:49:48 pm »
This is something that has puzzled me for some time. Eventually found out the answer as it was discussed on 5 Live money today.

If you have protected no claims and you make a claim your premium WILL go up.

The no claims is a percentage discount.

So if your premium is £1000 and you have 70% no claims you will pay £300.

If you make a claim your premium will go up as insurance is based on risk and you will be deemed as a higher risk.

So if your premium doubles to £2000 and you have protected your no claims discount you will still qualify for 70% discount. But you will still be paying double at £600

There is a misconception by a lot of people that making a claim when you have protected no claims discount will not affect your premiums, it will.

But if you don't have it protected it would go up to £2000 any other business apart from banks would have trading standards all over them

Hi John,I to found this out the other day somebody keyed my car so I rang the insurance company as it could involve  spraying approximately half the car, I asked would this make a difference to my premium next year, she replied yes it is only your no claims bonus that is protected, that will remain the same, but your premiums will definitely go up, so I told her that I would not be claiming, and I would not be renewing with their tinpot insurance company again.

It would be cheaper for me to pay a body repair shop, as the insurance company wanted £300 excess plus they would probably increase the premium by about the same, so I now have a choice get it done properly and keep the car ,attempt to repair the scratch myself using various kits that are sold on the Internet probably not a good idea, or sell the car as is and get something better, and remember this time to Park the bloody thing on my drive.

Get this one then!!

I crashed the van in February. Wrote it off and had to make a claim. The van was only worth £2000.

You would think when it comes to April and I have to renew it would go through the roof as the new van I bought was worth £5500.

Lets have a guess at how much percentage wise my insurance changed!!

No NCD as thats on the car and a very recent £2000 claim!!

Many people are under the illusion that ''protected no claims'' means thier insurance will never go up.

I found this out many years ago when I made a claim for an accident which had protected no claims.....come the renewal, my premeum went up hundreds of pounds. Why was that i asked, when my no claims is protected.....it's because you made a claim ::)roll

I'm just looking at my renewal with Churchill (which is in front of me) and it says.....

Why not protect your No Claim Discount?
Your no claim discount reduces your premium making it important to consider protecting it. With this protection, your discount will be safe, even if you have to make a claim. Details of this valuable protection are shown on your renewal notice.

Legal assistance insurance.....yet another scam charge!
If you need legal assistance, most lawyers will carry out this for free and claim back the expenses from the other party.

That is what I thought happened and certainly was the case when I made a claim many moons ago.
None of this hiking of premium's etc
But that was in the Pre Banking  Crisis days .
