van off the road
« on: April 17, 2013, 10:46:37 am »
my van was reversed into at the weekend (door and wing smashed in) , insurers have collected it and given me a poxy corsa as a hire vehicle ! >:( 7-10 days for repair.
has anybody else been in this position ?
I have a few trad jobs that can be done without ladders but wfp is really out of the question even with a backpack (I dont want to be liable for any damage through water spillage etc. to the hire vehicle plus it would mean getting some barrels and a lot more effort)
Obviously if they cannot supply a van with a wfp tank and pump (I will call them again later) then I will have to claim loss of earnings. Any advice please from anyone who's done similar ? would be good to know whats an acceptable claim before I go further, dont want to be mugged off over this  :(
Many thanks
simon

i had the same situation a few years back, they tried to mug me off with a hire car but i demanded a van ( and got a transit connect t230 delivered to me)

i just ratchet strapped my wydale tank in the back along with a leisure battery pump and controller, i carried on as normal and didnt lose any work

you shouldnt have accepted a car, ring the hire/insurance company and demand they give you a van, go and salvage some wfp parts out of your van and drive to a window cleaning supplies shop buy what else you need and go to work

dont sit on your arse for a week body shops have a habbit of taking longer than expected you could be out of work for 2-3 weeks even a month if you do nothing

Most commercial policies should provide a like for like replacement vehicle - all of the ones I've talked to in the last 10 days did.

I agree.
I've had hire vehicles supplied to me twice by my insurance company and they have both been not equivalent but better than my vehicle and more than suitable to carry on working with.

success ! of sorts
I have called insurers again and put through to a different company that deals with the legal cover side of things, awaiting delivery of a van at 4pm ! woop woop  :D
unfortunately living in a flat I had no where to put my 650 ltr tank and so the van was collected along with pump, fixed reel and battery , doh !
I can borrow a 400 l layflat and was going to try and figure a way of using my backpack as battery and pump ,hopefully that will work. at the very least I will be able to fill up the backpack at will without the need for barrels !
I enquired about compensation for loss of earnings, which they have agreed I can claim providing I have sufficient proof. I am still a little unsure as the best way to go about this, I do not want to provide them with work lists and addresses etc,
so I am thinking take my average daily earnings from my last tax return ?
please does anyone have any advice on that.
many thanks
Simon

courtesy van arrived, brand new nissan NV200, 70 miles on the clock  :o :),
I'm going to have to be so careful, even rachteting down a tank in the back is going to mark it, this thing is spotless !
