Hi all

I have a 10'' d.i cannister and the resin never seems to last that long.
Water TDS going in is around 9/10 and i produce around 2ibcs full a week, how long do you reckon it should stay at 0 for....?

Depends on how much water you are making per week. maybe you should get a bigger resin vessel. My ro gets it down to about 10/11 but I have the size of resin vessel that takes half a bag of resin. Lasts me about 7/8 months. Hope It helps.

Yeah i think your right with the getting a bigger d.i vessel.
Just wondered how often people changed there resin with the smaller cannisters.
Produce around 1500 litres a week, its not a problem changing it, just gets irritating when doing it every couple of weeks!!!
Bigger vessel it is me thinks!!

I used to change resin every few weeks when the reading got to about 010, but since I started using a booster pump I haven't had to change it for about 6 months and it's still on only about 003. So i'd definitely recommend a booster if you want to save on resin.

I hate changing the resin - pain the the neck! So every 7 months suits me. How long does a bag last you, how many fills from a bag do you get?

all depends who much water you produce 1000's of litres a week not long. 100's a week a good while.

I live in a soft water area not checked tap water tds  lately but it is usually about 45-75 ppm but i have changed resin in my 11 ltr DI for the fourth time 5 months might have to get a double DI on the go .

It all depends on flow rate as well i produce approx 1500 ltrs a week so a 25l bag of Tulsion resin is going to last me about 7 months thought it would have lasted longer. Mike

I have a small 11 inch vessel after a large vessel. I just change the resin in he small one when it creeps up until the resin gets useless in the large one.

The second vessel can be any size but it'll make your change frequency a bit odd.

For those who don't know, method is to put two vessels in series, so water goes through vessel A then output from that into vessel B then output to IBC/van/whatever.

When you first buy the additional vessel, fill it and it goes in as vessel B.

The day the TDS out goes above zero, disconnect both.  Move vessel B to be the new vessel A, empty the old vessel A and refill, then put it into position B.

The saving in resin is noticeable immediately.

Note that if you let TDS drift up you won't save a single penny by letting it increase; this setup means that you might as well change it at 001.

+1 if you're talking about checking the resin to see if it needs replacing that's bang on.  Only the output matters.


I do check water going into the resin for another reason - so that I can quickly see if anything is going wrong with the RO membrane.  I have an in-line meter that shows water in and out of the RO itself.  Over time, I now know what output to expect from a given input.  If it ever drifts up, I'll know something is wrong with the membrane.  I have the numbers written on the side of the 4040 housing.  So, for example, I know that for an input TDS of 285 to 315 I should get an output of 7.  Below that 6, while input of 315 - 365 should give 8.  Sounds a bit like overkill but I went through a series of membranes last year and at £200 odd each, I take it seriously.  As soon as it changes, I'll be looking for the cause.
