Thanks chap for the input and a special thanks to my mate Spruce always ready with his good knowledge of vehicles.
I have solved the problem it was a bad earth connection. I checked the battery and only registered 11.56 volt so thought put the charger on and then saw the state the earth lead was in so replaced it. Thanks, there is always someone on this forum to help and advise.Me  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D again

sorry just a question but why thank spruce knowledgeable as he is, but Matt Batemen told you what was the likely problem, That fitted your description? just wondering

I'm glad you got the problem sorted.

I've experienced a problem with a poor earth cable on a previous van. Most earth cables are secured to a stud on the gearbox. Steel bolts, an alloy threaded gearbox and heavy current don't mix and corrosion quickly starts.
I experienced all lights on the dash, but when I tried to start the engine, everything went dead.
