WEBSITE question - How much for this?
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:58:18 am »
Could you help me please?

I'm sat here recovering from surgery and will be out of action for six weeks. I'm building two Local sites for someone. Now that I've written down the included features, I've realised I have almost certainly under priced. It's no big deal but will have to change in future.

So... from a customer's point of view, what would you expect to pay for a Local site with these things built in?

LOCAL SITE

Wordpress based. This means you can add, update or change pages yourself (even at 2.00 o'clock in the morning), without waiting (or paying) for a designer to do it. You can easily add one, ten or even ten thousand plus pages yourself if you have enough time! These will also be set up to be human and search engine friendly (no long numbers or squiggles in the page names).

You can add articles, text, images or video's yourself using a simple to use "dashboard" similar to Microsoft Word (no website coding needed).

The site will look like a "proper" website rather than a blog (no "comments" box on each page). There will also be a separate blog that is integrated into the site. This will be a proper blog, complete with a comments section.

The individual pages and blog will be set up to "auto ping". This means that the search engine spiders will be notified whenever you change or update something. There will be a built in safeguard to stop you overdoing this and be classed as a "spammer" by the search engines.

The site will have....

-An image slider (between two and seven images sliding across the page (you've all seen them). You can have photographs of the different services you offer. You can turn this feature on or off.

- Choice of seven colour schemes (which you can change yourself with one click of your mouse - and change back again just as easily, if you don't like it!).

- Visitor E-mail capture - to help compile an email list so you can keep in touch with people. Again, this can be turned on or off.

-Links to your Social accounts.. Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc.

-Article / post scheduler. You can add several posts or articles at once. The site will automatically publish them (and tell the search engines) whenever you want. You could spend a couple of hours loading up articles and then program the site to "drip feed" publish one say, every week or every couple of days over the course of several weeks.

-"Breadcrumb" navigation. Similar to Amazon. The bit across the top that tells visitors exactly where they are on the site by category, page etc.

Performance wise, it will have a few "plugins" added. These are additional pieces of software that give the site extra functions. These cover things like on page SEO, site / page load speed, blog anti spam, automatically produced Google sitemaps etc.

Not only will they be added but will also be already "tuned" to the right settings (if you don't know what you are doing you could struggle for ages trying to figure out how these work).

All that you will have to do is provide the content.

what do you think?

Hi Garry, hope you're recovering well.

What are you actually providing? Are you entering the text? Providing some stock images? Helping with SEO? Or is it just regsitering a domain and installing a template & plugins?

I think it comes down to the clients expectations - if you're expected to be on call for any issues, to come up with material for the site(s) yourself etc, then the charge would be higher.

For somewhere in the middle of this (me providing some text, images etc) I'd charge £150-£200 inc 1st years hosting (then £50/year hosting fee).

What have you charged?

£150 -£200 !! Seriously Ash ?

There's a lot of work involved from Gary's description and I'm guesssing the charge could be anything between £500 and £1000, even more if you start adding geo-specific pages.

I won't tell you how much mine cost Ash, it will ruin your Sunday  ;D :o

That's why I asked what's included, Steve.

Setting up a wordpress site, and installing a few plugins is not £500 worth of work. Building a full site, sourcing images and writing/editing text to make it better for SEO and 'copywriting' etc is a lot more like it.

I find nothing more annoying than talking to a "web designer", then finding out after an hour of chatting, that i have to provide all the text/images ect. I don't mind providing a little unique text for them to build upon, but i want a web designer to use his skills to provide everything that is needed for a website and not just bits and pieces.

How long does it take 3-4hrs max? £300-£400? But thats swapping time for money.

The point is.

What its going to be worth to them?

So next time its working out how much their average sale is, repeat business over lifetime of customer, ave lifespan of customer etc.  Show them how much just ONE new customer will be worth to them. Come up with a price based on likely increase in revenue.

Now you have done sites there are 15-20 marketing strategy suggestions you can offer at a premium. Tell them to reinvest the free money they get from the sites after your web site fee has been covered.

Good questions to ask are - whats your most profitable product line/service, what would you like to do more of, describe the type of customer you would like to replace the ones you dont, how do you integrate your online/offline marketing currently, ultimately what do you want to do with your business?

Shouldn't take to put that together. I could do it in around 2 hours and that includes sourcing the plugins, but I have done a few.

£200 - £250.

I know a guy in Indonesia that would do if for $50 for me.

Obviously if Gary had to create all the content himself the fee would be higher.  As he didn't mention the content I presume its the setting up the site part.

You can sell SEO as an upsell, but its pretty basic stuff. Now a days, you dont want to do too much onpage seo anyways.

If you want a bigger ticket you can sell the benefits as wynne pointed out.

if i knew nothing about websites and garry told me he was going to do all that I would expect a £500 bill

If I was selling fitted kitchen or double glazing and knew all it would take was 1 job to pay for it then i wouldn't bawk at any price, if I was a poor carpet cleaner who earns £200 a week then any price would be too expensive... value is in the eye of the billpayer

but £350 is not a lot to spend for a good site

Thanks for your comments. Do I take it that people are more interested in top end sites?

Ash, thanks for the kind words. Short notice hernia op and the inactivity is driving me nuts (and everyone around me!). I was thinking along similar lines to yourself and Tony. It's the content that takes the time.

I had priced at £ 200 or £ 350 for two (as they ordered together) on this occasion. After your comments, I think this will go up

The sites (I have not built them yet) would be feature rich ENTRY LEVEL sites where I set up everything, including categories / silos and the on page SEO. in other words, the framework but not the "filler". Neither copywriting or ongoing promotion would not be included. I forgot to mention, they adjust automatically to mobile or tablets.

They would be aimed at the people who are

1/ On a tight budget or
2/ Those who complain on here of not being able to alter their sites or contact the designer or have to pay for every amendment.
3/ Those who want to tinker with or expand their sites in the future.

I now realise I will have to provide training for them as well (no big deal).

Mike and Steve. Thanks. If I was providing content then the figure would be a lot higher. Sites would almost certainly be one off designs as well. I also think that at the top end you have to look at not just the site but the ongoing promotion that goes with it.

Wynne, thanks. Again if I was doing a top end, higher priced bespoke site, those factors would definitely come into play.

Deep Cleaning solutions. Totally agree with what you say. I've only come across one "proper" designer who understands marketing / copywriting. If I was doing the whole package, you would get whatever you wanted. There would almost certainly be a monthly promotion charge as well.

I do feel however that using absolutely unique content is top priority. That's why I would encourage anyone to use their own images, videos and text wherever possible.

It's an interesting test before I decide how to take it further.

I don't think you're a million miles away at that price Garry, the only thing that would make the price increase for me is the training to make the edits for themselves. Also, how are you going to work it if (when) they cock something up? Are you going to charge per hour, or goodwill?

I recently made 3 sites (admittedly it was for a friend @ mates rates) for £450 - took me about 2 full days in total. I came up with the content, but it was for a taxi company so there was only so much that could be said...

Gary22, are you just using a standard free theme? As in they get what their given?

I recently made a site for a family member, similar to what you described. Hosted, plugins, sliders etc but no fill. I charged a little u der £150 but he wanted to give me more. From what little experience ive had of this, people expect to pay. Ive found most people are happy to have everything ready for them, the fill in the blanks.

Matt.

For this particular level of sites I'll be using a premium, paid theme with a couple of hacks.

On one off jobs I will often build my own WP theme instead (to be more in tune with the niche).

Some plugins are standard, some are paid; where I hold developer licenses. Upmarket one offs would have one or two extra (costly) plugins that I would not use on cheaper sites.

Humping rotaries? I wondered where that was leading for a while!  ;D

As I remember it was me asking you for advice about not just Wordpress but autoresponders as well.

Our site cost £350, copywriting £250. Info to be added. It's CMS site so I can edit at anytime.

I really don't like stock images, another company in Norwich has uploaded pics to their fb page and even named the people, it's easy to tell they are models....  :P
