Some vans you have you have to have ignition on for the socket to work, so quickly drain battery, especially if it's an older one causing you to have problems.
The connector in to the lighter sockets can overheat if in constant use to, could cause the fuse to blow all the time.

If your van has to have ignition on, and to pay for someone to wire it direct to battery you might as well buy a leisure battery.

Yes you can, however it can have issues- some of which ricardo has identified.

You need a "high quality" cig lighter plug (halfords or caravan supplies shop). You then need the correct grade cable to run from it to your pump. If you don't get the right cable it will result in a voltage drop & cause issues.

I ran a van like this for a few years. I had to have ignition on though so I had a blank key cut (one without a chip in it) so that the key would turn on the ignition but not start the engine (security reasons).

I now have a wire tapped into a permanent live in the ignition loom & so don't use the lighter socket anymore. ;)

Thats not a bad idea at all.

I have driven to the scrap yard and bought a battery for £10 on a couple of occasions over the years, to continue a days work when my leisure battery died.

You must have a small leisure battery then!!

In the time I've had mine its never got low or ever taken it out to charge!
I do have a 110ah one tho, so I know I will always have power

its an 85ah but i dont have a split relay, and it lasts so well i take it forgranted occasionally and dont take it out to charge it, it can do 2 weeks without a charge sometimes.

Oh right, you not thought of fitting one? Or even a solar trickle charger? I got both on my battery.

So while the van been parked up while I have time off it still charges up!
