Dropping to 6mm hose is ok. The smaller bore may have the effect of increasing pressure with in your system depending on the hose wall expansion capacity. This increased water pressure may mean that the pump will work slightly harder to generate the same flow as before.
This happens as the smaller bore can create a restriction in the hose. different systems will react in different ways. I would also advise if you use a pump controller recalibrate it to the smaller bore hose.
All in all It seems most people using 6mm have few issues with the benefit of a lighter hose.

We use 6mm.
Never used 8mm so cant comment on what is better, or what I prefere.
All I will say is, I have no reason to consider swapping to 8mm.
