As seen on TV!
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:44:03 pm »
My claim to fame (not!)

Not even as Andy Wahol said "15 minutes of fame"-more like 49 seconds in total!

Channel 4 "You deserve this house" presented by Amanda Lamb.

Amanda Lamb and her team of volunteers are in Manchester to surprise 52-year old Jane Down, a tireless charity worker who provides much needed support to cancer sufferers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcL8jSoXkVI or
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/you-deserve-this-house/4od#3367892

Unfortunately there are adverts in the programme which you can't avoid if speeding through the programme.

If you wish to avoid seeing me  :o I feature at 11 minutes 54 seconds till 12 minutes 00 seconds (just before the first adverts) and again at 21 minutes 55 seconds till 22 minutes 38 seconds. Business name check in closing credits at 46 minues 41 seconds

Alternatively you could just blink ;D ;D or look away  ;D ;D ;D

THe creative director told me that they had always replaced carpets uptil this point and having seen what could be achieved they are apparantly now having second thoughts for future episodes. Shame they had to mention hiring a machine as an alternative. :'(

You would not believe where they asked me to place the microphone :o :o :o :o

Nice one mate, you certainly look the part! Good temp too which is nice to see. It's a  shame they said that a professional can do the room of that size for about £50, then went on to say that you can do the SAME job yourself for about £15!

So it's telling the public that basically its a waste of time getting a pro in because it can't do a better job than a hire machine.

When will these sort of shows (most media in fact) tell/say the correct thing! Apart from that it was great  ;D

Did they pay you for the work?

I have been approched twice by production companies filming episodes in Scotland and they always want it free.

It isnt even Melinda or Anneka asking!

I was approached by Richard Randle to do the carpets for 60 minute makeover a few years back.. I cleaned the wedding shop co-joined with his flower shop..

They expected me to do it for next to nowt and pay my own travel expenses...
So fair play Rog...

Cant believe they went and blew it away and said you can do it yourself for 15 quid.

I would definitely do this for free. Gold for marketing, would be all over my website. It creates instant trust.

Christ, I'd be willing to pay to be featured on the telly, let alone do it for free/peanuts! I would've worn a shirt with my logo in HUGE lettering mind.

I don't think the DIY for £15 detracts too much from the message - still massively worthwhile imo.

Good work Roger :), although I don't like the bit where Amanda says you can rent a carpet cleaning machine for around £15 per day and do it yourself >:(

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. :D

I was approached on a Thursday afternoon by the programme's researcher in London looking for a cc to do the work on the following Tuesday.
I thought it'd be a "bit of a giggle" and something a little bit different from usual. They were upfront about saying you'll get a name check at the end of the programme and be listed as one of the suppliers on the website. They were very upfront about saying that no money would change hands. :'(

They wanted me to arrive at 3.30pm and hang around until they were ready to do the bit about cc. If you've ever seen these programmes, things always run behind schedule so I could easily have been there till gone 8.00pm.

Now as it happened I had an immovable appointment at 6.00pm that evening so (with my usual panache) I confirmed I would be there on time; do the job to a standard above what they were expecting BUT (take it or leave it) I was leaving at 5.30pm so they would have to fit their filming around my schedule. Amazingly they were prepared to run with this. And this is exactly what happened.

Mind you, I did have to give them quite a lot of info very consisely so they had a better understanding of what professional cc's can do and I've offerred my services for any other programmes they make around the North West. I do have overalls with my name on the back-I just think I'll need to get some more printed with my name in foot high letters on the front as well. 8)

It was fairly manic at the house and it was quite interesting seeing all the other trades there. A lot of the makeover is fairly superficial and the carpet I cleaned was dead easy to clean even if it was a bit knackered. Privately the production team were well impressed but stated that they had to mention the DIY alternative. (As Clinton said, it's funny how they never mention that about decorators.)

Amanda never deigned to speak to me, though.

PS In all seriousness do you think it qualifies me to sell myself "as seen on TV"?
