Rainwater Harvesting
« on: July 02, 2012, 05:39:08 pm »

Got a spare IBC connected to downpipe ready for next downpour.

Anyone got an idea how to get rainwater from static thru a DI Vessel.

Realise I will need a pump of some sort but no idea what type ?

probably fill that ibc in about 1/2 an hour with the rain we've been having here ;-)

cant you just run a pipe from the submersible pump thru the ro system or di and into the other ibc

How do you deal with all the grit and debris that comes down off the roof with the water?

The roof is now very clean because it hasn't really stopped raining for about three months and all the debris is washed off.
There is some settlement laying in the first IBC but that's where it seems to stay. I have a grill over the input from the gutter which stops anything large going in and I make sure I keep the input free from leaves and other rubbish. Anything small that makes it past the grill and that doesn't settle will either get picked up in the resin or the truck pump pre-filter.
What I will do, when I get five minutes, is to put an inline filter between IBC 1 & 2 and that should get just about everything.
Next time the main IBC is empty I shall give it a scrub and rinse with bleach.
Someone on the forum was using sponge as an inline filter which seems like a good idea.
All in all it works very well.

Cheers EandM
I was bothered about the crud in the water degrading the resin - if it does get picked up in the resin does it use the resin up quicker - block the filter or make no difference?

It probably does have an impact on resin life but as the resin is lasting 2 to 3 times longer on rainwater than it was on my RO supply it's still a winner.
You could always fit inline half inch filters before the first tank and that would be at least as good as a 'domestic' supply though you would need to clean them regularly.

Better to pump into van tank , then through di in van . I read somewhere , resin lasts longer if you reduce flow, but if the rain water is under 10 Tds, then you could use it without putting through di.

Have a look at Machine Mart(sorry-computer illeterate,so dont know how to put up links)
The clarkes ones are awesome!!
Just installed one for our system(off mains water) about 6 hours to fill an IBC(from empty) from mains
You can adapt to fit your ibc and it will transfer in very little time at all(beware, they run at such high psi , you will need to make sure every fitting is totally watertight or it will keep cutting out with even the hint of a leak)
Defo need to install prefilters and have a stock of spares to hand.
This is the definetly the way forward....I checked our water butt the otherday for tds-reading 25!!
Its a no-brainer really-Jewsons have a fantastic looking slimline storage system but its a wee bit pricey
Please let us know how you get on and with as much detail as possible

Roy
