It's what untrained dogs do. My dog doesn't attack the postman or the post.

Dogs have bad habits its the owner`s responsibility to change that behaviour. I now use a 10 in piece to correx board to push my leaflet through. I do get mad if dogs charge the door. Its not a dogs job to bite, that type of behaviour is tort or encouraged by the own.Maybe not meant to maybe by the owner.  ITS JUST BAD OWNERS.

Its not a dogs job to bite,

Where's that written?  I've known dogs in the military trained to protect their handlers for the purposes of crowd control; and they wouldn't have done that by shouting "Go away you nasty people!"; they would've savaged anyone within muzzle range of their handler.

My dog also has written permission from me to savage anyone's ankles who enters our house uninvited.  It's in his terms and conditions of service.

thats what i'm saying the dog didnt asked to be bought by his owners and brought up how it was... there was nobody home when it happened to me so i didnt bother going back to the owners to complain but even if i had then it wouldnt have changed what the owners had decided to teach there dog to be like.

in all fairness i was on there property and sticking my fingers in there letter box so if they had decided to get a dog to stop the post then thats there business... for all i know they could have done it on purpose to stop the postie bringing the bills which doesnt seem like such a bad idea actualy  ;D

I think the owner should have a sign up, if this kind of thing is likely to happen.
You know, a little sign on the inside of the door, above the letter box saying-
DO NOT BITE WINDOW CLEANERS' FINGERS, IF THEY PUSH A LEAFLET THROUGH THE LETTERBOX.
This will save the dog any confusion and it getting into bad habits.

Tosh: I was a dog trainer in the Air force  in a war zone  for 2 years in National service in Angola against Terrorist from Cuba,Russia and Angola  . AS you said they were trained to attack is not a natural thing for a dog to bite humans, only if corned will they attack naturally. You need to teach to attack or praise and encourage them to bite. Any dog biting without command is a risk. If your dog bite any one on your property you would be in major poo just read the papers it always there.Dog bites own found guilty.

It'd not be the dog I'd be in the poo for, it'd be the claw hammer I used that would probably get me in the most trouble.

most dogs that bite through the letterbox aren't trying to bite you, they are trying to retrieve the mail, and seeing that I have a dog that is born to retrieve it is hardly surprising, I have had a couple of bites but learnt and don't stick my fingers through any more

And c'mon, you can't call what happened in Angola a 'war zone'.  I've been involved in bigger Naafi bar punch ups.

most dogs that bite through the letterbox aren't trying to bite you,

The one that bit me, just prior to playing tug-of-war with my hand and his teeth definitely tried to bite me, and succeeded very well in fact.

Tosh: Angola was no different for Afghanistan I will tell you one thing If U K defence force had a little chat with the old SA defence force before going in Afghanistan we would not be loosing so many good lads as we are. The vehicles with IDe prevention ability they needed were invented 30 years in Zimbabwe and Angola conflict. These vehicles would deflect out words any explosion believe me South Africa are world leaders in this field. They thing is the U K army is  armed for conventional warfare not insurgency role. You cannot he a gentleman in these type of conflicts. That is why we will never win in Afghanistan will not will the harts and minds of the people.THEY WILL ALWAYS BE LOYAL TO THE OWN.Its in dread in there
culture. The old saying  " you can kill a terrorist but you can kill there beliefs."This is what drives them.

My brothers dog did the same thing about 2months ago . The guy thought they were in as the car was up the path so was knocking for some time and shouting through the letterbox and when he put his hand in there cavalier puppy jumped up and bit him he went to the police but they did not get involved but he has taken out a private prosecution against them. My brother was adamant he did not want to pay him but his insurance company has told him they are going to pay him anyway regardless of his wishes. It seems because there was no sign up or warning that they had a dog that they are liable

My son's Jack Russell goes ballistic when the post comes through the letter box. She waits for it and as it appears she jumps up at the door and just shreds all and sundry that comes though. If fingers happen to be there then they get the treatment as well. No matter what my son does she still does it. Its as though she becomes a totally different dog - demon possessed. And she loves the post lady; if she's outside she goes up to her wagging what left of her tail and makes a fuss of her. Even if she knows it us at the door a rattle of the letter box drives her nuts.

She ocassionally spends the day with us, so I stick a note up on the door to leave the post in a small wheelie bin we have in front.

My son solved the problem at his home with a plastic bin that balances on a bit of wood in front of the letter box. His letter box isn't in the front door. The first time she tried to attack the post the bin came tumbling down on top of her. She's now scared of that, but she still goes mad when the post lady arrives. She sits on the window sill on the 3rd bedroom which overlooks the front door, so she can see the postlady when she's up the street.

After she's gone, then the dog just goes back downstairs as sleeps in her bed.

If you are posting flyers fold the leaflet in half and use a flat ruler to push it inside. This was a good tip by someone on here.

I'm just winding, mate; apologies.  I know nothing about Angola, apart from it's north of Barry Island somewhere.
