New Ro
« on: December 20, 2011, 04:37:08 pm »
I am in the  market for a new ro. I have just been put on a water meter so waste water is a concern. Can anyone recommend an ro that has a low water rejection? I have had a merlin for years but cleaning spot said that they would not recommend a merlin for those on water meters? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The 300gpd units with 3 100gpd membranes are good because waste water is recycled twice. Water production rate is slow but more than sufficient in a static system for 1 man. Also performs well in producing a low tds. Probably get close to 50:50 ratio of pure to waste.

Ideally the 4040 ROs should be set around 70:30 waste to pure.

they are small, probably the same size as a small suitcase, im sellling a booster pump if you want one , same as this one

this will make you water much quicker and help produce less waste

I started rainwater harvesting because I hated the water waste plus were on a meter as well . I have a 1000l tank in back garden to store rainwater then pump to water butt in garage ,comes into water butt at 35 tds ish . I have been pumping through RO with booster pump and let waste back into water butt so the water is going round and round effectivley. The product is o.ootds and waste comes out at 35 .My theory is this: If my tapwater that I did use goes into RO at 160 ish and down drain then if my rainwater is going in at 35 ish i.e at least 4 times less TDS than tap then sending back round system via water butt isnt going to affect my membranes very much , its quite early days so far but I will keep you posted. I have noticed sediment pre-filter getting dirty quicker so have ordered a re-usable washable sediment pre-filter to get round that.
Others seem to be able to get rainwater at 00 tds but here in muck leeds it just isnt happening.

The more membranes you put in series the less water you will waste. e g no 1 membrane leads to no2 membrane and 2 leads to no 3 etc.

at 35ppm you'd be better off feeding it through 2 large di vessels.

I reckon you'd get 60,000ltrs or more to a bag of resin and no messing around with an ro.

me?

I've got a kick-ass twin 4040 pumped with auto-flush.  Up to 700ltrs an hour if I want - no meter either!

700l an hour - impressive stuff. I dont have the work for that much water but Im happy not to be bothering  much about meter any more. I f I get real busy then my system will evolve further and some of you guys on here have really got themselves well sorted to produce good supplies of water so I know where to come for advice. To be honest i didnt think I would get as busy as I have but its a case of the more custies I get the more I get !

I used to use 4040 hf5 on water metre, wasting 60 percent to 40 pure. used about  800 litres a week pure (2 working just short of 3 days.)

my water metre bill for home and system was less than 30 quid a month. which is pretty reasonable really, and not as big a deal as thought would be.

4040 also produced me just short of 300 litres an hour with booster pump. handy when in van and want it all finished and put away.

35 ppm no need for d i or r o. just clean windows like some on here say they do with no problems. with 35 ppm even with one di vessel a bag of resin would last a long time.
