Merlin producing 67 ppm
« on: November 30, 2011, 05:39:48 pm »
Had a Merling now for a couple of months and the best we are getting out of it is 67ppm. Our water in is 380ppm. Had an email from Melin (Ge Capital) via Cleaingspot(who sold us the Merlin) and they say this is perfectly acceptable and within their "parameters".

Had a quick chat with a well known resin supplier today and he says this is a load of @@@@ and the Merlin should get the tds down to about 10 or 12!!

Anyone else had problems with a Merlin? We are absolutely hammering the resin at the moment and are seriously considering going back to a 450gpd Ro system!

Cheers

The problem is... its all down to the pressure of your water and the amount of water coming out of the tap and the temperature.  My understanding of Merlin's don't reduce it down as most other RO's anyway

I have a merlin....over 5 years now, never changed the filters other than the sediment filter which comes before the main ro.
Mine goes in at about 350 - 400 ppm and comes out ranging from 25 - 50 (approx). It is pumped in at 75psi as the mains flow is rubbish into my garage.
I dont do bad on the resin, well nothing to worry about.....i do run double di's though before filling the tank direct to the van,and when the ppm starts rising i give them both a good shake and i can get another week or two out of them...they dont tell you that in the manual... ;D

Cheers for that Dan..if we got tds down to 25, we would be happy!

You wont get 380 down to 10 or 12 with a merlin, I'd say 30-35 should be achievable though

http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/GE_Merlin_reverse_osmosis_system.html

They do the pre and post carbon filters for the merlin at GAPS...
We also use a 10" housing with a carbon filter before the system even though the system has a carbon filter in along with the two ro membranes. We done this to make the filters and ro's last longer...it has worked for us so far and at minimal cost.I think it was mike from cleantech (years ago) that told me about doing this just as a way to reduce overall membrane replacements due to my high tds input.

Hi H2ose.

that TDS is way to high - at your PSI you should be able to get 15 TDS - no problem.

if you read the instruction manual ( which i didn't  ::) )  there is a small sentence that states if you are
going to produce more than 50 lts of pure per week you should install another pre-filter ( sorry cant remember if its
sediment or carbon ) as the one inside the merlin wont cope with a higher volume.

i ran mine for six months without the extra filter and TDS went from 8 to 32 - changed merlin carbon filter & added extra pre filter and got it back to 18 and held that for over a year ( changing extra pre filter every 6 months )

Thanks Dan thats much appreciated mate...I cant see a pre filter (housing) on that link tho?

Hi Darran, cheers for that mate. So do you think we should change the carbon filter AND buy another, after only a couple of months use?

http://www.gapswater.co.uk/acatalog/filter_housings.html

Phone them up and tell them what you are after.....
June used to be the lady we spoke to,not sure if she is still around although i think she is.
It doesn't matter what housing you get ie blue, white or clear you just need a 10 inch housing and carbon pre filter.

At this stage i'd buy a 20" filter housing and carbon filter - about £30.00 in total ( if memory serves ) off ebay or red hat diving - this should be enough as the carbon pre filter in the Merlin is only 2/3 months old

My old merlin used to give me 42ppm @35psi, so with a booster pump you should be getting a lot better than that.  :-\

When I ran a merlin, I had it set up as follows:
The three housings that were part of the merlin - top one carbon pre-filter, lower two merlin membranes.  Before all that though I also had a 20" sediment pre-filter.  Even al lowish pressure (35-40 PSI), I could start with a TDS of about 007 - though this would rise after a few months to around 030.  Tap water is c.200 around my way.
Please note that the carbon pre-filter that fits into the top merlin housing is not the standard 20".  You need a slightly shorter one that is specially for merlins.

At one point I was under the impression that Merlins were the R.O. to envy, well after seeing my mate struggle with his for months and some of the T.D.S. figures here I have come to the conclusion they are CRAP!

I have a VYAIR R.O.with its own booster pump my water gos in at 380 and comes out at 9!
